Amiadarone

Hi

Since my second ablation seems to have failed due to right sided heart enlargement due a genetic condition, the local cardiologist has suggested life long amiadarone! Obviously, I'm going to discuss it with the EP but I wondered if anyone had an experience of using this for a long time - I know all the side effects and did take it for eight months before so no horror stories please - I'm scared enough of it already!!!

You may find this thread of mine interesting - pay particular attention to comments of Jonathon Pitt Crick - EP

This is very helpful to me too as my Arrhythmia Nurse has asked me to research this drug, which apparently my hospital offers post ablation if not fully successful. Which is probably where I am. Meeting tomorrow so it's timely for me.

Very interesting. Thank you for sharing that. I read they also use a ,50 dose now too. But Still not sure I fancy taking it for 20+ years (hopefully) !!

Not sure I would either but for my husband - not much alternative and at his ages it’s all about QOL and that has improved SO much.

Jajarunner Amioderone is a controversial drug which you either tolerate or you don't. Over the years on this forum there are some posts from people lucky enough to feel the benefits and it does help so much. But there are others who found the drug quite toxic and had to come off it because the side effects were horrendous.

Its a decision that you will need to make with your EP but if it helps your quality of life then go for it.

Thank you. What a choice! I've not spoken to the EP yet, I think he'll be dead against it...

That's a bummer for you! But I guess you have an answer. Dronedarone is apparently considered a good alternative if you are looking into this. Both are potassium channel blockers. I've been discussing this with my arrythmia nurse. Apparently the K- blockers are thought to assist in remodeling the heart (presumably positively) over time. So I'd be asking about that. Thyroid issues are a contra indicator with Amiadarone.

I didn't think dronedarone was available in the UK? Or rather only in very exceptional circumstances though I may be out of date here. Thanks for replying 😃

I think it might be as my arrythmia nurse specifically mentioned it as an alternative given my hypothyroidism. She was just giving me a heads-up really in case my EP suggests it as a way forward.

Sorry to hear about the choices (or lack of) that you have been presented with. I have never had to take amiodarone, so can't comment other than I have heard the horror stories too. See what your EP says, he knows your heart and may have other ideas. Best of luck.
