I've been telling people this for years and explaining why long term use of PPIs is a bad thing. They never learn though. Personal experience is wonderful but sadly not transferable.

Thanks Engmac, clear explanation and credible. Caution to all, I had reflux before I got AF; I believe it was a contributory factor. I would advise eating slower, improve your diet, keep your mouth closed when eating and reduce stress in your life.

Interesting. I just read around this topic. Before I was diagnosed with AF I had been given PPIs by my doc, for reflux. They made me feel bad so I stopped taking them. I immediately got palpitations. I mentioned this to the GP and I was then sent for an ECG and was discovered to have occasional AF. Since then I've been prescribed PPIs on a few occasions, always with nasty side effects. I'll now investigate the possibility of low stomach acid and try to see if it is causing GERD and exacerbating my AF.
