Was on amiodarone for 3 to 4 years, keeps your heart in rhythm, but messed my thyroid up, now on carbimazole for over active thyroid, the only good side is I can eat all day and not put any weight on,
So if your on it for a long time keep checking your thyroid.
Good luck

Hi higgy, I can only share my experience. I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid but not due to amiodarone. Because I knew of the connection between overactive thyroid and AF, I was referred to see an endocrinologist. He prescribed carbimazole but did not recommend long term use because of AF. He suggested I should have radioactive iodine treatment which kinda worried me a bit especially as it was known for causing hypothyroidism (under active thyroid) but was assured that if it did, it was much easier to manage. I took the plunge around 18 months ago and so far, my thyroid, with the exception of TSH, is in range..
Amiodarone is highly concentrated in your organs and tissues with its high iodine content you should have been monitored carefully and checked every 6 months, should only be used for life threatening situations, when other treatment or drugs cannot be used. Patients are not told about interacting with other drugs they may be taking and the many adverse effects.
