Hi Trixie.

Bisoprolol no but Apixaban I can't comment on (not been on it).

I have heard some med's can make you put weight - however Bisoprolol was ok for me. I can't confirm about Apixaban though.

Flec might but I'm not sure. For me personally I eat one meal a day and weight is pretty much the same. It's very easy to put on but not so easy to lose !

Sorry but can't help further.

Well done Bantam - if anything lowering your BMI like that will really help your heart. Please share your secret ! I wish I could lose half a stone - easy to say but not so easy to do. I've cut down to one meal a day (ie no breakie or evening snack) but it's hard going.

As for putting on some weight - eat more and it's likely you will put on weight. It's worth you doing moderate exercise though. For example walking for a mile or so daily.

Trouble is I didn't need to lose weight, have always been skinny, so I'm now underweight and BMI is to low ☹️

Bring on the cake 😋

How about eating nuts and using nut butters and bananas as snacks? They have the added benefits of being good for you rather than cake.

Thanks for the suggestion but I can't eat nuts or bananas, I have ulcerative colitis so I'm quite restricted in what I can eat, my dietician is happy for me to eat cake, whatever works is ok 👍

Yes with Bisoprolol & very hard to then shift the weight, I know others had similar experience but not with Apixaban, that was all me eating too much!

I thought it might be the Bisoprolol

Wife is experiencing similar problems. She has to be on a strict diet to loose any weight and puts weight on as soon as she's off the diet.

Due to the meds her heart rate lurks in the 40 - 50 s and even when exercising she rarely gets into cardio. So her opinion us that the drugs not only prevent the AF episodes but also reduce the HR which impacts the natural burn of calories.

An interesting theory, and one that seems more than likely to me. I was changed last year from Sotalol and Warfarin, which gave rise to no problems (except the usual Warfarin variations of INR and dose every few weeks), to Bisoprolol and Apixaban, which seem to be working OK as far as I can tell, except that my heart rate has dropped to 40-50, and weight is creeping up steadily. My wife says that's because I eat too much chocolate, but I the heart rate....?

I try to walk a mile or two each day, but it's not always possible because of a wonky knee, so I've just bought an exercise bike: my physio says not more than 15 minutes a day to start with, so it may be a while before I see any results as regards weight.

I was a bit concerned to be taken off Sotalol. It was prescribed by a consultant at the John Radcliffe 5 years ago, after 2 years of Bisoprolol had done nothing except lead to a full left circumferential ablation which resulted in me being kept there under observation for a week or so. After that, each year at reviews in Oxford I was told "it's the Sotalol that's keeping you out of here". I'm keeping fingers crossed that the long-term return to Bisoprolol (only 2.5mg daily) will be more successful than those first 2 years on it!

Sadly I have gained weight with Bisoprolol too - and find it very hard to lose. I am on Apixaban as well but had never heard of that med being a weight gainer. Things have got worse since Biso dosage was increased to 5mg morning and evening. I’m going to make a concerted effort to get more exercise (having a desk job doesn’t help); and try and halt the weight creep once and for all. My usual slimming world healthy eating efforts which I used to be able to rely on are just not making a difference any more. Good luck Trixie!

I lost 4 stone while on bisoprolol and unable to exercise due to very symptomatic persistent AF, and then ablation. Bisoprolol slows everything down and you have to adjust your food intake accordingly.

So Bisoprolol makes me put weight on and Apixaban makes my hair fall out it's no joke having a f is it?

AF is dismal. I think losing so much weight has helped enormously though. I'm on rivaroxaban, haven't noticed any side effects from that, no longer on bisoprolol but I take sotalol now, which suits me better.

Yes I have gained weight just in the last 4-6 weeks with flecainide. So annoying isn't it. I haven't noticed the gain with bisoprolol and apixaban and have been on those for years. I have possibly contributed to the gain as out of boredom because hubby and I have been shielded since beginning of lockdown and I bake, then because of not being able to see family or friends, we eat it. Good luck

Bisoprolol did it for me big style!!!! it also affected a couple of other female family members who were on varying doses of it - I put on weight and found it nearly impossible to lose it even on 1 meal per day!

Try eating 3 small meals a day to keep your blood sugar stable. Avoid sugary foods like frosties and such and eat lots of raw fruit , like apples, and lots of veg to fill you up, but avoid carrots and parsnips.

At the end of the day you have to balance energy into your bloodstream and energy out being burnt by muscles , otherwise the fat and the sugar will clog up your arteries. Weigh every night before you go to bed and react immediately to any increase. Determination is the key

I’ve not noticed this - although I’m only on APIXABAN. But I’ve lost three stones since I started taking it and lead a healthy lifestyle. Not had any noticeable AF either. I exercise a lot.
