Hi, after an eye examination I've been advised that I have the very early stages of macular degeneration 'nothing to worry about at this stage' - apparently, but obviously annual checks are essential, and in the meantime, the very best thing I can do is to always wear sunglasses on bright days and to eat loads and loads of green stuff, kale, spinach, broccoli etc., but being on a blood thinner that poses something of a problem! I used to be on Warfarin where green stuff has most definitely to be curtailed and because I'm veggie, I plagued Dr to move to Apixaban because I read that drug is ok for eating of the green stuff....but now I'm reading that isn't necessarily the case! I am at a loss to know what is best and how to proceed....anyone else out there in the same situation? Many thanks in advance.....
Advice please!: Hi, after an eye... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Advice please!
All I can say is I have never had any problems with Apixaban ,eat lots of dark green veggies ,Kale,Sprouts, spinach etc almost every day .Best wishes xx
Love to know where you read that and who wrote it?
I, like Wilsond take Apixaban and eat loads of dark green veg and as Apixaban is a Factor X antagonist ie: works on a different part of the coagulation cascade, unlike Wafarin which is a Vit K antagonist - which is why you need to balance your Wafarin dose with intake of greens which are rich in VitK.
I also take Apixaban and eat loads of salads and green vegs. The only thing I was told to avoid was St John's Wort but there have been some indications on the forum that grapefruit juice may be suspect too.
Thanks, everyone, can't remember where I read it but it's good to have some reassurance. The thing I've noticed most is that sadly, I sometimes suffer from haemorrhoids and the bleeding is horrendous, like a veritable torrent and I didn't have any of that on the Warfarin! And yes, I'm going to have them dealt with by injections...can't wait! 😳
I don't know where you read that as DOACS have no dietary restrictions (other than making sure that you take them with food when so instructed). Go for it.
That’s interesting, I have AMD and didn’t know that but I do eat green veg every day - have to as my husband grows it by the ton!
I know a lot of people don’t like greens but I adore them, lucky you that you have a plentiful supply in hand! I will continue to happily chomp on them....🤗
My Dad had macular degeneration so obviously it’s on my radar . I take Visionace and on a trip to an ophthalmic surgeon over an eyelash problem she gave my eyes a thorough examination and I asked . She was very much in favour of taking Vidionace having examined the retinas of lots of people who take it . Worth a go . Full of anti oxidants . I get mine from Boots the Chemist but available anywhere
Research Scenar South Africa. It is supposed to help. Another possibility is pulsed electromagnetic field PEMF devices. PEMF assists with blood flow to the small blood vessels in the eye.
I take Apixaban and I eat lots of greens, never had any problems. Take care
