Hi everyone I know none of us are qualified to make decisions on others behalf so just opinions will suffice my question is does anyone have any info /experience with nattokinasse I'm 60 male with chads score of 0 last time i saw ep he said i would be on anticoagulant at 65 in the meantime I'm having terrible afib bouts which really worry me when they hit and have been looking at natto as a possibility any thoughts welcome

I understand your concerns Tomred and it makes a change to hear from someone who seems almost desperate to take anticoagulants 5 years or so before the medical profession consider it necessary. As you rightly say, we are not qualified to advise on medications but it does seem a bit strange (and highly risky) to take a supplement which claims to do something to you which all the professional pundits say you don’t yet need. Added to that, the supplement is probably not subjected to all the independent trials and tests that proper drugs are exposed to so there is unlikely to be any way of knowing what, if anything the supplement is doing to you, or worse still, if it could harm you.

Probably not the answer you are looking for but unless there is a significant history of strokes to close family members, it would probably be better to wait until you score 1 on the CHADs score. If there is a history, tell your GP and see if that will influence their decision.......

Agree with Flapjack. If you have a lot of AF worth asking again about AC

Strange that this is the second mention of that today and as I answered the previous post, I think it was Dr Gupta who advised against taking such due to the inability to judge or control effect .

In your shoes, if I was as worried as you obviously are, I would have a discussion with your EP (or your GP) about going on anticoagulants early. Best of luck, please let us know what you decide.

It seems that nattokinase has been widely studied in China , Japan and Korea but that this research has not percolated through much to western medicine. I think from the research done in the east it is clear that it does have anticoagulant properties. What is missing is what dose would be needed to prevent afib clots. There is also the problem with food supplements of whether the capsules actually contain the advertised dose. My personal experience of natto was that I had a TIA whilst taking it. However I was not taking a high dose.

I have only read a couple of research papers so far but was pleased to read initial studies were encouraging with a comment that it could in due course replace warfarin and DOACs if larger studies were confirmatory. The problem with these 'more natural' solutions is that there is no one out there prepared to sponsor sufficiently large research, however optimistic the initial results look, so I guess we are stuck with Big Pharma and the potential for more side effects for now.

If only! I had no side effects whatsoever on nattokinase and would be delighted if a properly calibrated dose could be prescribed. I do not like being on Apixaban. It gives me mild indigestion ( nowhere near as bad as Pradaxa) and I think makes my joint pain worse. This got better in the period when I was having Lovenox bridging jabs before my hip op and returned once back on Apixaban after the op.

This research suggests 10mg should be OK but it was only over 28 days sciencedirect.com/science/a... ....more reading to do!

Hi Tomred! I have had AFib for decades and tried Nattokinesse in hopes to replace my antigoagulate. I had a mild stroke while using it, so obviously it was not enough to prevent strokes. The stroke gave a big scare, wasn’t pleasant, so back on Apaxiban now and will stay on it.

Thank you for that input that sheds a lot of light on my question what dosage of natto did you take

Flimmeri profile image

Sorry Tomred I couldn’t tell you exactly the dosage. I bought some supplements from Dr. Steven Gundry and in one of them there was natto, which I thought would be beneficial for me. I would have liked to continue using it, but after my scare didn’t dare taking it with my apixaban incase it would cause bleeds.
