Hello Stevie and welcome to the forum. Are you talking about an ablation, cardioversion or something else? I don’t think it’s normal to put much weight on but I guess activity levels should be less so some increase might be likely. If you’ve just had an ablation, the easiest thing is to read this factsheet.

As CD says, it unusual for either procedure to have an unaccountable impact on weight. If your eating habits or activity levels have changed then obviously it might be different. Both procedures can cause varying degrees of trauma to the heart, so it’s not unusual to experience discomfort but actual pains probably should be investigated. What I normally say is after an ablation is if your groin is bruised, just try and imagine what the inside of your heart must look like! If it hasn’t improved, you should seek proper medical advice.....good luck

Hi and welcome. I’m sorry but with such limited information it would be impossible to comment.

What procedure and what for?

What medications are you taking, if any? Some medications given to slow heart rate will have that affect.

Are you still as active as you were before weight gain?

Has your food intake remained the same, although you maybe not as active?

Have you had your thyroid tested?

There could be multiple reasons for weight gain, above just a few but hope that helps.

I don’t think you could attribute weight gain to either.

I've had 4 cardiac ablations. I never had any chest pain afterwards. But .... I've read on this forum that some have had 'pains', and they subsided apparently.

Recovery is usually pretty straight forward and rapid. I was tired for maybe a week. Never had many abnormal heart beats to speak of afterwards ... although it can happen and certainly doesn't mean failure of the procedure.

They say it takes 60 days or so for the ablation scars to heal. After 2 weeks or so ... there usually are no restrictions on physical activity or exercise. It can take weeks to months for the elevated heart rate (which is normal after ablation) to subside.

The first ablation can be effective with AFIB. However, it is well known that it often take 2 procedures to effect a high percentage 'cure' for AFIB. I can tell you that my recent ablation was much improved in comfort and technology than the ones I had 10 years ago. For example, it was no longer necessary to lay flat-on-my-back for 8 to 10 hours without moving. I got up and walked the halls two hours after the procedure.

Good Luck! ... and I wish you effective treatment.

I lost quite a bit of weight as my Afib got worse. Maybe because I couldn’t eat as much. Gaining too much back since ablation as well!
