What decongestant is safe but works?

Hi all. I’m struggling with my rhinitis. Is there a safe decongestant for us AFibbers? I’ve tried every natural remedy going (cost a fortune!). I know Sudafed is a big No but am missing it 😢

Hi Cakemaker. Is your rhinitis because of a cold, or something you have a lot of the time?

I have found that cutting out dairy has done away with the catarrh I used to get. It's also stopped me snoring, much to my husband's delight!

I used to just use olbas oil on a tissue to inhale - not perfect but it certainly helped a lot, and I still use it if needed for a cold. The only remaining issue for me is a slightly runny nose when I've taken my bisoprolol.

Hope you find something to help.

My pharmacist who I 100% trust recommended Oibas Oil spray , I appreciate we are all so very different so just a comment as one to mention to your pharmacist. She knows I am on Amiodarone , Bisoprorol and Ribroxaban . Good luck

Olbas oil in steam 2/3 times daily help. Nasal rinse x2 daily to keep sinus cavities free from infection. Cutting out all dairy. Breathing exercises - I like the Patrick McKeown ones on YouTube and actually found it an almost instant cure for when I am congested.

I’ve avoided all decongestants as I find they usually make the problem worse for me and always have side effects.

My doctor recommended snorting a warm salt water solution for my nose. I put a teaspoon of salt in a cup of boiling water and let it cool down then administer it by pouring some into the palm of my hand and then I suck it up with alternate nostrils. I like it because it works and uses no unnatural chemicals. I've had a long term problem with my nose (over 50 years) but this is the most effective thing I've tried and no side effects. Takes a while to develop the full improvement though.

I have taken Serrapeptase 120,00 SPUs - thats about the largest SPU rate I can get but UK have 1,000,000 SPU ( proteolytic enzyme ).

I started at 40,000 SPU but found the higher rate is more effective over a longer period either because of quality or quantity I.m yet to find out.

I used to take cetirizine for Allergic Rhinitis but find one capsule of Serrapeptase will last over 24hrs.

As suggested above, first try salt. But if the solution is too strong, ouch! So I use isotonic saline. You can get it in 5ml capsules. I also use Eucalyptus oil. Ten drops on a tissue lasts a few hours and leave it beside me daytime and night time.

I have suffered from year round rhinitis for some years. A thoracic specialist prescribed a nasal spray - the trade name is Avamys, generic name is fluticasone furoate. This has been effective and seems to have no interaction with warfarin and Sotalol which I also take.
