Morning Campers!

I saw on another post that AF causes damage to the heart tissue. Is there any more information on this please?

I've had a look on Dr Google but that hasn't helped !!

Hope you are all well. I've had a rough night with the Crazy heart gang. Own fault, don't think I drank enough water yesterday. Woke up at 2 am dry mouthed and AF....note to self...don't do it again !!

Uncontrolled I think is the vital word here Wilson. If AF causes a high uncontrolled rate then this can lead to muscle stiffening perhaps causing cardiomyopathy and enlarged left atrium which in turn can lead to more AF. There is little evidence that rate controlled AF causes extra morbiditites or is life shortening. Remember that any and all treatment is only for quality of life.

Many people who present with cardiomyopathy find this reduces or even dissapears when rate has been controlled for a while.

Hi BobD, you are right, the words my cardiologist used was, keeping me comfortable. As you say quality of life.

Morning Wilsond, I don’t know, but I hope not. As I am now in persistend AF.

Cardiologist implied that we control the rate would be better then PAF.

But will ask your question when I get the chance.

Good morning Rienij, Bob says the same too. Even in persistent I can see that keeping the rate down can only help matters?

Hope you are keeping well generally xxx

Have you been tested for sleep apnea? I must say that most of my AF started at night and I found that stopped, once I was treated for SA. Waking with a dry mouth is a symptom as it indicates you have been sleeping with your mouth open.

Just a thought and my understanding of AF causing damage is same as Bob’s answer to you.

Thank you CD I will ask for a check-up for SA,to rule it out if nothing else.

Stay well x

Covid19 can cause myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. It has also been known to cause pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac around the heart.Neither condition would be related to AFib or heart rate. Rarely the myocarditis could result in cardiomyopathy which would result in decreased cardiac output. If this occurs AFib and increased rate would affect cardiac output and possibly result in Congestive Heart Failure. Bottom line.. AFib does not increase the risk of getting either condition.

Interesting i got COVID-19 back in March and by mid June i got terrible ectopics, i wonder if it was the inflammation caused by COVID-19
