I went through the same some months ago and yes i was instructed to miss my morning Apixaban. I suggest that you contact your dentist for confirmation. My extraction was a particularly "bad boy" and it took 36 hours for the wound site to completely heal. Good Luck!!

Thanks for writing- I hope you are well on way to recovery- my dentist seemed anxious to extract my tooth under their current working rules

and apaxiban just added to his worry !

Sorry but that is his job. It is important to get clarity because if you do not skip a dose could result in a trip to A & E.

Take care.

Can I muddy the waters with my experience? I’ve had two large back teeth out - one upper and one lower and didn’t stop Apixaban for either one.

For the upper one, I had it done at 8 am which was part of that dentist’s protocol for anticoagulated patients. The large socket was packed with dissolving haemostatic gauze and stitched. I took my morning dose an hour late.

The lower one was an emergency smash and grab done halfway between my Apixaban doses after I broke the tooth in pieces.

I had no problems with either procedure - except for rigid fear 😂. Your dentist should have a protocol which should guide him/her. There are many people on anticoagulation, after all yet we are sometimes made to feel like a problem.

I wonder why your appointment is so late in the day? When I asked about the early appointment for extraction, the dentist said it gave time for ‘things to settle before night time’ which helped to reassure me. It also meant I could delay my morning dose until after the procedure.

I hope you can get reassurance and your procedure is swift and painless. And fear free!

Thanks for this info - I will check back with my dentist particularly about timing

I had a major procedure carried out by a hospital consultant. They said that I only had to stop apixaban if what was being done was about equivalent to having three extractions or more. In my case it was equivalent to that so I had to stop the day before (just the evening dose) and then restarted immediately after the procedure.

My EP told me to stop taking it a day before any dental procedure. I forgot about it once, and bled profusely. The dentist didn't seem to like working through all the blood, but it didn't cause any significant problem for me afterwards. Anyway, you should ask your doctor.

When I told my dentist I was taking Apixaban, he said it doesn't really make much difference most of the time - and seemed pretty bored about the whole thing! But he did add it to my notes.

I had a tooth extracted at the hospital last year, they insisted on missing 2 doses of Apixaban then resume normal dose in the evening, [ it was a molar that had had previous root canal work done on it ]

Mine is exactly same - ie previous root canal treatment half remains in gum - I will take on board what you say - thanks for writing

I have had two teeth out at different times and didnt stop my apixaban. First time made me panic a bit but there was very little bleeding which soon stopped.

Hi Spinbiker. I had an extraction a year or so ago. My Dentist thought it was not necessary to stop Apixaban. I saw him twice after the extraction with bleeding, and this was followed by two trips to A & E, and on the last one I was given the tablet Tranexamic which was effective. Mention was made previously on this Forum that the NHS web site gives guidance on Apixaban and when, or if, it should be stopped. As you can tell from the answers members are all different ‘bleeders’! TerryW.
