Ranitidine seems to be back!

I have just had a prescription delivery and it contained Ranitidine . I rang the pharmacy and they said that it is back! At least in the 300 mg size (if you take 150mg you could use a pill cutter). I presume this means “permanently back”- if anyone has any extra info I would be interested to hear. Apologies if anyone was alarmed at my announcing the prospect of it being permanently withdrawn as my GP implied it might be.

PS Always trust a pharmacist rather than a GP - my GP said that!

I have been taking Ranitidine for a number of years after more than 5 years on omeprezole. I am trying to reduce the amount of medication I take to reduce risks from osteopaenia and other side effects from low stomach acid etc. When problems started with Ranitidine last autumn it was with batches of Zantac which had traces of a substance known to be a long term risk for cancer. Other manufacturers didn't have this complication, however, after some investigation (I presume) NHS recommended to put new patients on omeprezole style medication, whilst allowing those on Ranitidine to continue. My pharmacist was and still is happy for me to continue with it and so is my GP. I have reduced from 2*150mg to 1 a day before bed to help with my hyatus hernia, but ideally I would prefer to move to just peptac (or other antacids) or nothing longer term which has less risk than any of the aforementioned medications. 150mg Ranitidine is readily available if that's what suits you.

By the way I began with GORD and have had and recovered from peptic ulcers with assistance of omeprezole style med and significant change of diet and attention to reducing stress which exacerbates my problems. Best wishes.
