On taking magnesium taurate when in persistent AF? It helped with my ectopics when in SR but now I am wondering whether to continue and order another expensive bottle. Anecdotally, any thoughts?

I’m in the same boat Barb. I started taking MT about a year ago when I started to get ectopics and a few short runs of rapid but regular heart rate. This year the situation has eased but I’m also in the process of having my thyroid treated so it’s impossible to know what’s helping and what’s not!

There’s a bit of me that says if you are feeling better, don’t rock the boat!

Well I was feeling better when I first started taking it but I am not sure whether to continue as it appears to have no effect on the persistent AF.

I was advised to take magnesium citrate to strengthen my heart muscle.I believe its effort works on all muscles to some degree. The suggestion was magesium would improve the pumping action of my heart that was a little large.I have persistent AF.When I was first checked re. heart and all its AF problems some years ago the poor pumping action of my heart was noticed.Had an echo and complete NHS check up - 2 years ago and the overall picture was much improved.....getting older but heart 'getting better'!

That's interesting. My EP keeps telling me that my heart is fully recovered from DCM just a little 'stiff.' So maybe best to continue.

I suggest as a non medic this a nice way of saying it is not pumping as actively as it might do.

Not as actively but at a resting rate of 95-105, too damn quick!

Magnesium does help if you have a magnesium shortage, which the experts believe most of us have due to a depletion of magnesium in the foods in our diet. Unfortunately few of us get tested for our magnesium levels in our cells and blood test do not pick this up. The other complication is that different types of magnesium get absorbed better in some than others so its a trail and error to get the best for you. The short answer is the magnesium is probably helping (there must be a reason it helped with your ectopics) and its conceivable the you have a shortage in something else (e.g. potassium, iron, Vitamin D, hydration, effect of PPIs etc etc)

But how to find out?

There is a test for potassium and magnesium levels in the blood, my Dr checks mine all the time because she knows I take supplements and wants to be sure I am not taking too much.
