Positive news

I read on here a while ago that not enough people post positive news - so in these times, I thought I’d chip in.

I’ve 53 and fit/healthy. I’ve had 6 episodes of Afib since 2014, due to either excess alcohol or stress. All required hospital treatment, with heart rates up to 200 and 3-4 night stays with amiodarone IVs. I spent a horrible year on meds (beta blockers and flecainide) but then came off all meds Sep 2018 and felt better. I discussed ablation with a specialist last July (last episode) who advised me to keep flecainide PIP and modify lifestyle. I’ve cut back on the booze (particularly red wine), but still have a few drinks. I get occasional palpitations but try to exercise daily and get my heart rate up as that usually works for me. Touch wood, no more reoccurrences and I haven’t needed the PIP. I know it was never that frequent, but the hospital admissions were always scary.

I hope that makes anyone with occasional Afib feel there’s hope. Good luck all and keep safe.

Your good news is very welcome and it's great that you've discovered what triggers your AF attacks. How long have you been AF free now?

Another tip, if you're not already doing it, is to avoid any foods that contain artificial additives and cut down on sugar consumption. Some people, myself included, have discovered that supplementing with magnesium really helps prevent attacks.

Brilliant that you've recognised the importance of exercise. Keep up your good work and report back to us, every so often, how you're doing.

Good to hear and it sounds like you have had good advice. If you see improvements from your lifestyle changes don't be tempted to lapse back into the old ways, your current health is too important to risk for the sake of a boozy night or increased work performance.

Very good advice - so easy to slip back into bad habits once you start to feel better - thanks
