Hi
I’m looking for advice regarding paying privately for a Electrophysiology Study
How much have people paid ?
I’m Based in the uk

May I just clarify your expectations of Electrophysiology Study?
A private consult with an EP - circa £180-300. ECG usually on the day circa £180, an echo I think a bit more & get into scans expect getting into the thousands - I think one of mine was about £2000 - but I didn’t get it any faster than having it done on the NHS as the private hospital I saw the consultant at use NHS services & NHS don’t prioritise private patients.
I certainly found that private consultations helped contain my anxieties as the great uncertainty of when you would get to see someone on NHS list was very frustrating especially with very long waiting times.
Hi I’ve already had an mri / ct scan / echo cardiogram / pet scan / and an angiogram through the nhs 3 months ago but due to the hold up with nhs I was just wondering how much the ep study would be alone if I was to go private.
I’ve already been quoted £15k at Spire hospital Leeds that’s for the ablation and the ep study. My intentions was to pay private for the ep study then go through the NHS for the ablation. By the way this is for None Sustained VT.
Would the 2 procedures be with the same consultant? If so then I would ask them for a quotation, what it would cover and what it wouldn’t and also a time frame for both NHS & private & go by the recommendation of your consultant.
Personal opinion - in your shoes I would want continuity of care so splitting procedures in that manner may result in unexpected consequences.
My experience was that you cannot chose who does the procedure on the NHS so you may get who you want - or one of their team. I experienced that scenario with a pacemaker implant - which resulted in my having to have the whole thing redone 6 months later privately. Thankfully my insurance covered the cost.
Good luck.
Unless I’m mistaken, I think an Electrophysiology Study can be quite extensive to the point that it can include the use of catheters similar, if not the same, as those used in an ablation. In some cases, I think once inside the heart, the EP can even decide to go on and treat any obvious areas which might be causing the AF. If I’m right, then the final bill could be £20k plus so if you are not fully covered by insurance, you need to be sure that both you and the EP fully understand any limitations of funding.
I wouldn’t call it extensive I’ve already had an angiogram it’s basically the same process they went in through my groin I was wide awake I watched them do it on the monitor with the catheters I didn’t feel nothing just a bit bruised the next morning
suggest you google “how much can an Electrophysiology Study cost” and check out the results including what might they do and how long it might take. Forewarned is forearmed!
Your not really being much help my friend I asked for feedback of the cost. I know exactly what an ep study involves and how long it could take. I don’t care if it takes 48 hours needs must 👍
There is no need to be offensive or patronising. I see in your reply to CD you have been given a price which was not far from what I suggested. All I was trying to do was to make you aware that an EP study means different things to different people and in some case can include an ablation which again you acknowledge in your answer. Your original question comprised of 21 words and gave no indication of your depth of knowledge. My response was to help prevent you from making an extremely expensive mistake bearing in mind at best, you could be heavily sedated once the procedure has started.
It’s disappointing to know that for the first time in almost 6 years my attempts to help someone has resulted in such a rude and arrogant response.
Hi sorry you feel that way I never meant to come across being rude or arrogant I miss read you
I thought you was being sarcastic when you originally replied and quoted
‘ I suggest you google it,
no hard feelings hopefully thanks
and take care 🙂
Apology accepted....good luck with your treatment.
£200 & £70 for E C G, I took a E C G with me but they wanted one done there,
worth every penny, and you get on the N H S ladder quicker,
good luck
Hi can I ask what happened after your ep study ? Was it a success did it locate the problem ? and did you then get referred for an ablation ? If so where did the ablation take place was it done private or through NHS ?
Thank you
Had 3 Ablations,
Got sorted in the end, all my ablations was done on N H S but seen EP Prof andre NG, to privately at Spire prior to Ablations and he put me on waiting list and done 2 of my Ablations, top man
Hi Spire hospital Leeds is where I’ve been looking I’ve been recommended to go with Dr Chris pepper. Did you have any other tests before the ablation ? If so did you pay private or was the tests done through the NHS ?
My advice is to pick an EP who works NHS and privately at the same hospital. (This definitely happens at Harefield Hospital) make your initial EP appointment privately, which will be ~£250, then with any luck ‘he’ will move you onto his NHS list. This happened to me but it was a few years ago. At that stage I wasn’t armed with recent test results as you are, which hopefully will put you ahead of the game.
Pat
Thank you so much for this 🙂
Hi
EP study costs anything from £10,000 upwards. That’s the cheapest. Normally when they do the study, if they find a problem they will ablate then so looking then at maybe up to £20,000. Depends on what the problem is and how long it takes. I’ve had two ablation over the years on the NHS for 2 different rhythm disturbances. First ablation took about 5 hours second a bit less. Good luck with everything
Hi can I ask what the 2 rhythm disturbances was ?
Yes. I had an SVT caused by an AV nodal reentrant tachycardia when I was 29 ( I had a slow pathway ablation in the AV node) which masked paroxysmal atrial fibrillation which I had a PVI cyroablation when I was 51.
Hi that sounds very complex I hope you got sorted. Mine problem is NSVT
None Sustained Ventricular Tachycardia.
Hi the ablation did sort everything out and so far have been lucky. Symptom free and on no meds. Your problem however could be treated with a beta blocker. I’m sure you’re already on one.
Really I would have thought the NHS would be a treating you sooner rather than later All my problems were in the top chamber of my heart where as yours is the bottom chamber.
Hi, my understanding of these things is that they do the EP study and ablation at the same time, abating based on what the study shows. Why do you want to have it as 2 separate procedures? You would either be sedated or have GA. I had mine in January, privately but carried out in an NHS hospital, on a Saturday, overnight stay in hospital. The hospital charged £11 - 12thousand, can't remember the exact amount. The EP fee is on top of that but I don't know how much because he hasn't invoiced the insurance company yet.
I consulted with an EP privately but was then put on his list for ablation on the NHS. I would have had the ablation this month had it not been for Covid 19. I wouldn't have had it done had I decided to pay as the private hospital I would have gone to is being used as a Covid 19 care hospital. So just waiting. I think the consultation was £180 and studies done cost less than £1,500. I know it was less than that because I am a member of Benenden and they allow £1,500 for consultations and diagnostic tests and that amount covered it all.
Were you able to get the ablation sorted? I suffer from NSVT myself and was curious how you are doing?
