Before anyone is started on the new anticoagulants, a kidney function test is done to ensure that the kidneys are capable of excreting the drug efficiently. I haven't read any evidence that Apixaban can cause kidney damage and there is some evidence that the new anticoagulants are better at protecting the kidneys than warfarin.
Everyone taking these new drugs (NOAC's) should have a kidney function test done at least annually - this is to ensure that the drug is being processed correctly by the kidneys. I have taken Apixaban for six and a half years and the only thing found in that time was a lowering of my calcium level, for which I take calcium/vit D tabs. If your consultant has Okayed the drug for you, try not to worry. Sometimes what we read up on can be scary in itself.
I think the point is not that they cause damage but that if you have reduced kidney function then the drug may not be excreted so in fact you are looking at it from the wrong direction. Relax and enjoy please..
Ditto to how Bob replied - just ensure you have had kidney function test before you start and that you have a programme of regular blood tests every 6 months after starting.
Nothing in life is risk free but I am far more scared of having a stroke and view my anticoagulation as my friend and protector.
