Dear all

My EP tells me that all elective surgery ie ablation is of the menu for quite some time. I tried the Flec to stop my paf but that sent me to hospital. He now suggests amiodarone which he accepts is not ideal.

I know some of you will have tried or are on it. Can you give me some information please

thanks

Rod

I do not have a thyroid condition. Do you take the amioderone ?

No I don't. I was on the cusp of being prescribed it when my Afib. first kicked in some years ago.I also had an unresolved, at the time ,'complex' thyroid condition .....not medicated and suffering badly from it.I stopped the consultant just in time .he then put me on aspirin!! Thank goodness all is ok now with both conditions.

Amiodarone is prescribe for the treatment of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia, such s ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia and treated in hospital so you can be monitored. Do not mean to scare you but this medication has the risk of serious side effects . Also amiodarone can interact with other medications you may be taking Doctors do not check this, where a pharmacist will alert you, blood thinners such as warfarin may increase the effect. Also cholesterol drugs. Amiodarone is an iodine-containing compound structural similarity to thyroxin it has a high content which is why in some people effects the thyroid gland, the drug is highly lipid soluble and is stored in high concentration in fat and muscle as well as in the liver lungs and skin. See Amiodarone side effects by drugs.com. There are other drugs talk to your Doctor wish you all the best.

Thank you so much.

I have at this time discounted it and will most likely go for Dronedarone. Similar I believe but more gentle

I have now been on it for 3 weeks along with Blood thinner getting ready for a Cardio version. Just had a blood test to see how it has been impacting my body. It looks like it has had an impact and I now have an appointment with the doctor next week to discuss. It is not a drug you want to be on long term. I hope that I will not be on it for months, but who knows. I have not seen any other side effect from taking this drug.

My heart is out of Rhythm, has been for 2-3 year and I was getting dizzy spells again so I went back to the doctor. I had an Ablation in 2015. He says I need a Cardioversion but I need a scan before that can be arranged and I need to have had 4 weeks on the blood thinners and the amiodarone. My worry is that there is a big long list for Cardioversion so I may be on this drug for a while.

Hello for what it is worth I was originally waiting to have a cardio version following my AF and was in the interim placed on amioderone.I had no ill effects and it brought me into normal sinus rhythm, so I did not need to have the cardioversion. However I gather it is a pretty potent drug and can only be taken for a limited time and needs blood tests to monitor it, but that would be monitored by your doctor.

I have been on Amiodarone for a total of nine months with a variety of side effects. Fearing for my thyroid, I asked to go off it. After my third ablation, I was prescribed Propafenone 300mg x2. MRockwell's suggestion to consult drugs.com is wise. It would also be wise to look up the other anti-arrhythmic drugs, then. ask your the reason he choose Amiodarone as the substitute for Flecanide.

The Flec I took one evening for the first time and had an adverse reaction and landed in hospital. So no Flec for me.

New suggestion is Dronedarone as less side effects than Ami.

Rod prior to ablation I was offered option of 3rd cardioversion only if I took Amiodarone for a period before and after . I wasn't keen on this so opted for ablation. Was on dronedarone from July 2018 until December 2019 although it only seemed to work for me for short period after both ablations. Worth a try first as it does work for many and less severe than Amiodarone( without the potenial thyroid impact). I've had to bat off use of Amiodarone on 2 admissions to hospital end of last year although aware that may need to be considered at some point . Must be frustrating that ablation postponed indefinitely but understandable in the circumstances. Stay positive.😌

Sorry to say that the amiodarone has been a big disappointment for me compared to flecainide. I went three months with nary and event while on the flec. After running out (not available in China) I started the amiodarone. I’ve had afib, tachycardia and/or bradycardia every day since starting. I must just be someone for whom it just doesn’t work.

I was diagnosed with AFib almost three years ago. Taking Amiodarone 100mgm. daily and Eliquis twice daily. Feel great and have no episodes of AFib so very happy with the treatment plan
