New here -new to apixaban!

My husband was started on 5mg BD on Wednesday for AF as he scored 5, yesterday felt very very sick but didn't vomit. Coughed a lot in the night and woke up with a sore throat - he's coughed twice this morning and coughed up brownish gunge..Is this something we should be worried about? He thinks as it's obviously not fresh he's ok but I'm not so sure! Appreciate any comments.

It’s rare to receive posts from folk experiencing problems with Apixaban but clearly something it not right with your husband. Unless you have access to a walk-in health centre that opens over the weekend, I think you should ring 111 as soon as possible. I expect they will suggest a visit to A&E but only stop the Apixaban if told to by a medical professional.

Do not take any anti inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen

Get to A&E right away esp if brownish gunge looks anything like coffee grounds. Brownish is old blood from possible bleed down in stomach. And esp if on anticoagulants.

I have been on Apaxiban for 4 days and have been coughing up the same but I assumed it’s where I have quit smoking since I fell ill last weekend.

Get it checked out asap, although generally apixaban is well tolerated !

I’m on rivaroxaban once daily. A few months ago I had the same happen to me, accompanied by stomach discomfort and bloating. I went to A&E and after tests and examination was told everything was fine. The doctor told me vomiting after taking anticoagulants, which produces brown coffee type grounds was normal. Was news to me!!!

What was he taking before apixaban? Maybe there's a problem? Act promptly

Good luck.

Sounds like he's picked up some virus or another. Very unlikely it has anything to do with apixaban that he's been on for such a short time.
