Af just once
At the risk of not wishing to upset some forum members, when I say we, I mean I am not medically trained therefore, I am unable to give advice on medication but I suggest you discuss coming off the Apixaban with your Doctor before doing anything rash. It would be great if your recent experience was a one off event due to the reasons you outline, but if it isn’t, it means the increased risk of stroke is likely to remain. At 62, it’s possible that your CHADsVASc score is 0, but you need to discuss it with your Doctor because there may be other factors which need to be taken into account.
Hopefully this is a one off event and the steps you are taking to prevent further episodes will do the trick......fingers crossed!
Cardiologist Proffessor advice.
Excellent......but everyone with Paroxysmal AF starts with one episode.......
Hi and welcome - AF is such a rogue condition it is very difficult to know whether or not this is a one off episode.
My experience was one episode of fast AF for 3 hours and then nothing for nearly 2 years aged 55. A third episode was followed 12 months after that when the episodes started to become more frequent and more symptomatic which is a pattern I am sure people here may recognise.
I stopped anticoagulants 12 months following a second ablation and had no more episodes so thought I was clear, then had a TIA followed by a return of the AF aged 64 - I couldn’t get back onto the anticoagulants quickly enough!
Apixaban is a prophylactic treatment to reduce stroke risk so if you score 0 on the Chads risk profile, which you may well do, and chose to come off the Apixaban then I would suggest you have that conversation with your doctor and also make arrangements to be able to access a prescription immediately should you be unfortunate enough to have another episode and not wait.
Best wishes for a future AF free life.
How long ago did you have your AF attack? Alcohol is a known trigger, but thanks for the reminder to everyone.
