Good test of AFib at weekend!

I have had a rotten lingering cold for weeks,Now on friday got norovirus. How pleasant.

However, was expecting the worst but touch wood not a flicker...you couldn't make it up could you! Last week stood peeling spuds..off it went!

Also had a nasty confrontation at our local Community group on Friday morning. No handbags involved (but I won argument)

What I'm saying is how random AF is.....weird.

See you all soon.

Weird is the right word, there's no rhyme or reason as to why AF kicks off. Mind you I still have a sneaky feeling that it's because we're so relaxed we forget to breathe deeply enough. A bit of daytime and awake apnoea!

My heart starts it's pounding if I talk to someone on the phone who I'd rather not be talking to, you know those people that go on and on talking about themselves for about an hour!

Could you have been so intent on peeling your potatoes that your breathing became very shallow? It's all a mystery isn't it, but I feel we are edging closer to discovering the cause.

Hope you are feeling better now.

I really do think you’re onto something there, Jean... x

I agree with the breathing part. It happens to me. Also the LONG drawn out conversations when you grip the phone and want to scream shut the duck 🦆 up. But your heart takes the hammering. Also you don’t say the duck word. 😑

Ha! Yes I am exactly the same on the phone. It does your head in, and I end up rigid like something out of the wax-works museum. Had to smile.

Yes indeed! A mystery! (And whenever it stays beating steadily despite illness/high emotion, isn’t it a wonderful feeling of relief?)

Sounds like you’ve really been testing it to the limits -I’m so glad you haven’t got AF on top of the norovirus and aggressive confrontations... But what a hideous Friday you had 😩

Really hope the Norovirus is on the way out & you’re starting to feel better now xxx

How miserable for you - remember to keep your electrolytes up and to drink plenty of fluids. I hope you feel better by now.

Peeling spuds might involve slight bending over which, I think, compresses the chest so that our breathing does become more shallow. On the other hand, it could just be AF being a $€¥*#** as usual. xx

Reading all the replies, still a mystery to me. I sometimes wonder if it is hormonal, but that doesn’t explain fellows getting it.

sotolol profile image
sotolol in reply to Rienij70

Hi Rienij70 hope you are doing well. I think I try to look for a reason it happens, but it’s seems it’s not straight forward. We’re not alone. I don’t think even the medical profession knows either. One day eh? Bless you. Jo.

I'm exactly the same as you Gladys! I was diagnosed 4 years ago this month and half the time I'm still none the wiser.

I saw my cardiologist in October and he said from my download (I have a loop recorder fitted) that I'd had no AF episodes since April (last year). I thought great, the drugs are working and doing their job. Then yesterday, wham, AF, or what I perceive to be AF affects me all day! I've left a message with the physiologists and hopefully they'll call me back today to confirm whether I was in AF or not.

Hi Gladys

My heart was racing, I could feel it in my chest, my throat and even my ears. I was exhausted (couldn't stop yawning). I had a headache too. One thing I do notice with my AF is I can't stop urinating. Not sure why?. I could of wee'd for England yesterday. This in turn makes me extremely ANXIOUS. My anxiety was though the roof :( it's not a nice situation to be in. How do you feel when you think you're in AF?

Hi Jules like you if AF happens at night 🌙 I can't stop getting up out of bed for a wee. What medication do you take and how do you try to get calm and control your anxiety some times I feel that I have no appetite what so ever. It is a horrible feeling what do you think started the condition do you have trouble sleeping 😴??? I worry that I am disturbing my husband and he does so much for me I get a stress headache like something is tight around my head! Are you taking warfarin

Many patients complain of frequent urination, caused by release of atrial natriuretic peptide during AF episode.

Glad.....All I can say is after 7 years of AF mine hasn't got worse...touch wood..

Although I'm under no illusion that it won't .

What I do is try to distract myself when I get AF..something nice..nice.music

.favourite DVD .. not much good at meditation..butterfly mind but lots of people on here say it helps a lot

Middle of the night ..do you have a spare room.you could retreat to and read or have radio on quietly?

I take magnesium and q10 which seems to help a lot

I have improved my diet and weight for general health as well as AF.

There is a post on today about the effect of stress on AF,which I heartily agree with..main factor in my AF starting on my opinion. Stress at home.and work at the time of diagnosis much gone now and af has improved.

Do you have anyone apart from hubby you can talk to? Sometimes our closest ones are not the ones we need to discuss things with..I didn't want to worry my husband for example.

My symptoms now are a sense of quivering in the heart, frequent loo trips, rarely a racing heart beat. I sometimes feel light-headed..another reason to sit quietly and watch a film etc.

I try to remind myself that this too will pass and is not life threatening although distressing.

Best wishes Glad xxx

Hi Wilsond , Thank you so much for your kind words and advice, sad to say we only live in a one bedroom flat in sheltered accommodation and on 23rd December last year we got to celebrate our 58th Wedding Anniversary so we would not like to spend our nights apart. Talking about stress you could be so right, you see 9yrs ago we lost our only son Ray aged 48 to a sudden totally unexpected fatal heart attack. My problems seem to have arisen from then. We have 2 wonderful daughters , 3 granddaughters, 2 handsome grandsons even 2 great grandchildren with a third one arriving in May. We are well blessed but still our beloved lost son will be forever missed and never forgotten. Thank you so much for listening Very Best Wishes and Kind regards Glad&Dave. XX.

Ah yes...that would stay with me forevermore too in my heart literally. Trying to work through what is more day to day stress factors, including our silly AF to try to counteract your deep lying sadness can only help I hope.

I don't like sleeping away from my hubby ..after a mere 38 years...but I sometimes retreat to another room to sit up read a book etc if I get a midnight attack while it settles and the peeing stops...perhaps your living room if you're worried about disturbing him? Worrying about getting up n down to bathroom may not help matters. I'm any case I'm sure he don't mind love. Sending kindness xxxx

Dear Gladys, I have posted a few times about Sleep Apnea as for me it was clearly linked with getting up many times in the night for a wee and on a few occasions triggering off an AF episode. It was only when I realised after months that when I thought I needed a wee when I woke up, I didn't actually and it was my heart beat being badly interrupted , so eventually checked my blood pressure when I woke up and it was always extremely high. After a test I was told I had severe SA and put on CPAP and am now much better. Of course it might not be sleep apnea or indeed you might have already been tested but two doctors didn't pick mine up so that is why I mention it. Best wishes Max

It's funny all my family had colds and flu over Xmas except me. I never have a flu jab and havnt got flu for 5 years or more, I put it down to walking 5 +miles a day rain or shine. Have a healthy new year.

I really sympathise with the cold - me too! Hope you soon feeling better and yes, watch the old temper - my blood pressure goes up with confrontation - I have a neighbour from Hell and so have to excercise self-control which is difficult! Sounds like you were uptight peeling the spuds. All the best.

Hi Wilson :-) this wretched P-AF has a mind of its own doesn't it .

Sorry to hear about the Norovirus , I had it a couple of years ago and my discomfort was added to by worrying that I wouldn't be able to keep my medication down and consequently might have a stroke , I know ..... drama queen :-)

Early December I was on my way to having my hair cut, I don't usually drive when in P-AF but was almost at the hairdressers so parked the car and staggered to the hairdresser explaining I couldn't speak, needed to do breathing excercises and to pee every 10 minutes . The lovely girl was very understanding. Luckily a hair cut only takes a short time so I made it to home safely in no time proud of my achievement.

Stay well....
