When to take Bisoprolol?

Bridges4 profile image

For some years I have been taking my 5mg Bisoprolol every morning. My wife read somewhere (probably the Daily Mail!) that it is more effective taken at night. Does anyone have experience for the best time to take this medication? Thank you

I have never taken beta blockers but think many people find it beneficial to take them evenings. Personally I take all my drugs with dinner each night so they are absorbed correctly and become habit so few if ever mistakes.

The other advantage is that if they make you tired then you are not so affected during the day similarly cold extremities. You might need bedsocks (remember those?)

Thank you Bob and yes, during the cold weather, I need bedsocks!

Take care

I take Atenolol and my EP advised me to take it in the evenings.

I take Atenolol and I've been told to take them in the mornings.

I’m the same as John6 - taking bisoprolol in the evening slows my heart rate too much and also gave me horribly vivid dreams (even when I was on 1.25mg). So I take them with breakfast now.

No doctor has ever advised me either way, I think it was the pharmacist who suggested trying them in the morning. I’m interested to hear why they might be better to take at night :)

You too?! I am getting really horrible vivid dreams/nightmares! I’m now being referred to a sleep clinic.

Oh that’s grim 😕 I feel for you.

Mine haven’t gone completely with switching bisoprolol to morning, but are definitely reduced. (And I’m still taking a ramipril at night which may be the problem.)

I do remember a few posts in the last couple of years about various meds causing nightmares or vivid dreams - it seemed to work for some people to switch to morning, or switch the tablets altogether. Might be worth putting a search in to see if any helpful wisdom?

Really hope you find something that helps, one way or another. I’d be interested to hear how you get on with the sleep clinic etc. X

I’m going to consider other options with relation to beta blockers. The consultant said I could come off them, but decided that 1.25mg twice a day wouldn’t cause me that many issues.

I currently take mine morning and night, so bit of a dilemma.

Thanks, I’ve got the referral and they are putting me on an urgent list so hopefully not too long to wait now. I scored low on the sleep apnoea questions which was good!

in reply toDangerousdriver

I couldn't wait to get off Betablockers, I feel so much better without them slowing everything down. I now have them as a PiP and I think I have taken 3 in the last 2 years.

As for sleep apnea, I also scored low but did show SA in the sleep study. Again my apnea rating was borderline , and normally they would not have treated me but because of my AF history I have a cpap machine.

When I stopped breathing pre cpap my O2 sats plummeted to 80%, this puts a huge strain on your heart.

There can be a connection between apnea and AFib per my EP. Last 2 ablations didn’t last and he wanted to see if any underlying cause like sleep apnea before doing another. Study showed I have it and on cpap last few months. Now let’s see if last weeks ablation works...

I am experimenting with the switch to pm! I am just trying to find out if it will make any difference to my bp readings which are a bit up and down. Time will tell -the change has come from me and not any medic (I'm I a naughty boy!?) Take care

There is evidence that BP meds are more effective taken evenings but no evidence for beta blockers. My husband takes his Calcium Channel Blockers in evening 1 other but Beta Blockers in the morning. Read the original study DM often doesn’t give you the full facts.

This is what the NHS says on subject nhs.uk/news/medication/coul...

I read another study recently which was far more specific as it was a blind trial & looked at the specific meds & one of the meds actually helped prevent HR ‘ dipping’ at night but all I can remember was it wasn’t Beta Blockers.

After research reading my husband did change his routine and his BP has improved quite a lot since changing to taking 2/3 hypertensive meds at night thank goodness!

I changed my Bisoprolol to bed time as read that it shouldn't be taken with thyroxin which I take every morning. My dose was halved when my blood pressure went too low but I've never associated it with my dreams. It's a good point as I do have horrible dreams but thought it was because of my life situation not the Bis.

Oh do you know why you shouldn't take bisoprolol the same time as levythyroxine please? I've been taking them together for years and didn't know that. Thank you

I take mine together. I have never been told differently and my thyroid levels are fine (in fact I've had the levo dose reduced this year).

I take my Bisoprolol and Rivaroxiban at night. I find that because I am asleep I don't suffer the side effects. Also, I have my main meal in the evening which I think helps.

Ditto, I take my bisoprolol & perindiprol at night, always have and as advised by my consultant.

From time to time I get horrible dreams but that tends to be when I have put socks on and my feet are warm! 🤔

I was advised by hospital to take bisporol half an hour before bedtime, works for me.

I take my bisoprolol in the morning as my heart rate goes too low during the night. It is only about 40-44 during the day, sometimes a little bit higher, but really too low although no-one seems to do anything about it. My husband takes his at night, but he has a normal heart rate. All the best

Tapanac - I have been taking thyroxine for over 15 years, I always took it first thing in the morning with my other meds. I had a prescription review a couple of months ago with my pharmacist and he said thyroxine should not be taken with other medicines, it needs to be taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning and not have a drink or food for at least an hour after taking it. This was news to me - nobody had ever mentioned this before, after looking it up this seems to be the concencous.

My dose is split as per the pharmacy instructions to take 1 tablet (2.5) twice a day - which I assume is what the doctor ordered. I was verbally advised to take them around 12 hours apart so I do 8am and 8pm.

I found that BB-s caused my hearth rate to be to low. I had Bradycardia to begin with so with these meds I was in real trouble. I "weaned" myself off BB-s and now feeling much better. However, I do not suggest that this would be a solution or help to everyone. Check with your doctor. ( mine kept telling me when I described my problem, that "you are the only one", You are the only one.........and smiled at me pleasantly.......

I had to come off Bisoprolol as it made me so breathless and I felt I was walking like a zombie no energy horrible dreams, so my gp changed me over to Atenolol which still slightly breathless but nothing like before I take my tablet before going to bed along with my apixaban which I also take another one of them in the morning

Don't believe anything that you read in that rag known as the Daily Mail! BTW I take 5mg in the morning and another 5mg in the evening.

I take 10mg in morning. I hate this med it makes you put on weight and vivid dreams. Make me feel tired and more grumpy if tired. It's the GPs cheapest choice but not always the best.this forum has access to cardiac nurse advice for free - they have been brilliant for me personally. Always talk to them if you are worried.

I take 10mg in the morning only due to high risk of nighttime vivid dreams and nightmares if I take in the evening _ I feel like I’ve been conditioned to accept this rather than any proper explanation - what’s in this bisopropal drug that causes psyche disturbance? Anyway - if it works for heart failure then I will continue with it. John.

I take 7.5mg = 5mg in the morning and 2.5mg in the evening

1)I trust my doctor and consultant implicitly.

2)I am one of the lucky ones who can tolerate up to 15mg of Bisoprolol.

They loaded me up with 15mg of Bisoprolol before my cardioversion, which was successful. Afterwards I negotiated the dose down to 2.5mg a day (taken in the morning). I wanted to reduce this further because my heart rate now rarely gets above 55 when resting (previously 115), and as often in the 40s.

The consultant told me plainly, “I am very happy with your heart rate at 45-55. Keep taking the bisoprolol. Actually, I am more worried about you having a blood clot, so keep taking the anticoagulant too.”

Thanks for your reply. Have you been advised to take them morning or evening?
