I was taken off metoprolol today as I been on it for about 6 months with no improvements. So the dr decided to put me on diltizam 120mg 1x a day. Anybody have experience with diltizam??

Thanks!

I’ve been taking it for around 4 years and it works fine for me. Some here talk about swelling ankles and feet but that hasn’t happened to me (yet) and I’m on the same dose as you.....

My resting heart rate is usually around the 80’s and my BP is always good. That’s what worries me about taking the diltiazem.

It was prescribed to help with the pvcs

I've been taking it on and off for years - it does slow your system generally and gives me swollen ankles but I can put up with that as it works well for me and doesn't have any horrible side effects.

I have been on it at that same dose for about 9-10 months with no issues. I was started on it because I did not respond well to metoprolol which had been prescribed for ectopics generally and rate control if I had an Afib episode. I think the metoprolol may have made my symptoms worse (I read a couple papers about that occurring in some cases). The did better on the diltiazem. I had a cryoablation in April and remain on the diltiazem because it provides a bit of assistance with my BP.

I was put on Diltaziem 90 mg x 2 a day prolonged release because my heart rate wasn't slowing down with other meds bisoprolol7.5 mg - ramapril also increased to 2x a day too. Definately slowed things down. Hr around 80's now!

I was in Diltiazem for 10months but I was on 200Mg - I think I was over prescribed. However I had brain fog , tiredness memory problems and some breathlessness whilst on it (my breathing rate always seemed to be half a minute behind its requirements if you can follow. After I stopped them it took 4 to 6 weeks to get a sharp memory back which really surprised me. Looking back I think the problems increased cumulatively over the period, so they progressively got worse.

I understand many people are on this with no problems so try it and see is all you can do

ps beware of sunburn - it make you more sensitive - as I found out in Corfu!

I have been on 120 diltiazem for about a year and a half. I was a bit tired initially but adjusted well. No swollen ankles here.

From what I’ve read only people who get that side effect are people with an existing “water retaining” issue. For me is day 2 and so far I feel better and no side effects.

I have a question for you. I started the dilitiazem yesterday and here where I am today is Sunday so it being the weekend I slept in to about 9am so I took it both days around 9. However I start work at 6am mon-fri and it says to take on empty stomach and usually have a little something before I go in to work (cereal, sandwich, or a banana) so I’m wondering Do I have to take it at the same time every day or can I change it to 6am even though I’ve taking it at 9 these 2 past days?

As the usual starting dose is 240mg I should think you'd be ok overlapping slightly, also if you miss one you can still take it as long as it is more than twelve hours until the next is due. I am quoting from my instructions which are for Slozem extended release capsules so your instructions may be different as mine don't mention taking on an empty stomach - I take mine after dinner!

I take mine in the morning before breakfast. My instructions say with or without food. I had to change taking it from 9 am to 7:30 am when I went back to work. I took it about 30 minutes early every day until I reached 7:30 am and now take it at that time each day.
