Diltiazem

I have been struggling with high heart rate for a few weeks now ever since I weaned off of Propranolol. It has been staying in the high 90s-a little over 100 for most of the day except when laying down. I have had all the heart tests done and they all came back normal. I asked my cardiologist what I should do. He said I could do 2 week holter monitor (which I already recently did when I was on Propranolol) to see if the medication may have masked any arrhythmias present. He said he could also prescribe me Diltiazem 30mg to take as needed. Does anyone have any experience taking this medication? Are there any side effects? And can you in fact take it as needed? Any information on this drug or what I should do would be super helpful. I just want my heart to calm down, I never had this issue before starting Propranolol. That makes me think it is a withdrawal effect from the medication. Should i give it a little more time to see if my heart rate goes down on its own or should i take the Diltiazem as needed?

Hi, I take 120mg of Diltiazem daily which is the lowest dose so 30mg is a tiny amount. 360mg daily is the max I think. Side effects of larger doses are constipation, swollen ankles and various other things depending on the person. I love it! keeps my HR & BP down and helps my IBS.

I also have noticed much improvement with my IBS whilst on Diltiazem

Hi! I was on diltiazem and it gave me massive headaches every day and it did not control my BP, every one is different and maybe this will work great for you , I dont seem to do well on any of these meds.. good luck I hope it works for you 🙂

I was placed on it at 240 mg. It keeps my heart rate low. But made me gain weight under my chin and every step was exhausting. I asked cardiologist to reduce and now I am on 120 mg. I don’t feel as tired but my heart rate went back up a few notches. I enjoyed having the lower heart rate and may ask to go back to 240.

Are you sure you have the correct medication name as 30 mg seems odd but I don’t know so much about it.

Also it can make your heart rate go very very low -too low (30’s) if you exercise too much . Any changes you make to your exercise and diet may influence it.

I take long acting 180mg Diltiazem with the 30 mg as needed. I don’t have side effects. Which generally I take every day. However my heart rate runs 95 to 100 and I don’t like it. I am in permanent flutter after three ablations. Actually on the report it states Atrial flutter unresolved on the third and second ablation.Seems like this med isn’t helping or maybe it is. Dr wants to increase long acting to 240mg

I had breathlessness tiredness exercise intolerance poor memory and brain fog. I was on 200 mg modified release. I think I was over prescribed at 200mg. Tried 120mg was a little better but owing to some other issues was put back on 200mg. When I stopped taking them it took 4 to 6 weeks before I got my brain back. It was good when it happend! Terrible stuff but was still better than beta blockers for me!

Hope you have a better experience

I have been taking 240mg slow release with my 50mg Flecainide for four years and initially did have quite a struggle with lethargy and general tiredness but after reading some other peoples responses to this condition I researched it further and started taking Magnesium Taurate , C0Q10 and L-Carnitine and the response has been 100% with no tiredness or lethargy so much so as I have to watch when I take it as it can make it very difficult to sleep if taken after mid afternoon.

I took propranolol for years and finally weaned off it recently after 2 ablations, the last one successful. HR did speed up, from 60’s to 80’s, but no other problems. Also took dilitiazem over past couple years for hbp and rhythm control- very effective drug with no side effects.

I take 120 mg diltiazem daily. In the beginning I had some tiredness and constipation but it only lasted a week or so. Been on it over a year now and I am not having any issues. Keeps my heart rate about 65 to 70 and blood pressure about 110/70.
