Hi I am due to have a gastroscope in two weeks and appears to be some conflicting advice when to stop Apixaban the letter says morning of the procedure I normally take it at 8 and procedure is 8.15 my doctor thinks 48 to 24 hours but says it’s up to the endoscopist! Has anyone had this and got any advice please? I have PAF

If they say stop that morning that means you don't take it that day so you will be 24 hours since last dose. Simples! Follow what the hospital tells you. FYI when I had a gastroscopy I did not stop warfarin at all as the specialist told me nothing he did would need it stopping so relax and enjoy. lol 😁

Hi maisiemay, it’s great they’ve given you information of what they want you to do about your meds! Saves you wondering, and being directed from one department to another for info, as we can be!

I’m just thinking that if they specified ‘apixaban’ in the instructions, they ought to know it’s a 12 hour tablet, and maybe they are happy for you to take your 8pm one the eve before? I’ve had that before, when they don’t intend to do anything invasive.

Anyway I’m sure you’ll be fine missing the whole day before if it’s easier, but you could always ring the endoscopy letter number to double check if you wanted :)

Hope it goes well xx

Hi had the procedure 6 weeks ago. Consultant said 48 hours before to stop. Last Apixiban 8pm Tuesday hospital appointment 8am Friday. Good luck, had the other end done too!

Hi Maisie, I haven't had that experience yet, but I agree the information is all over the place. Some say 24 hrs, some say a few days. Do you have a cardiologist who can give you another opinion?

I am due to have a gastroscope next Wednesday with no mention at all of stopping my apixaban. I’ll phone the endoscopy dept as well. Not looking forward to this procedure at all.

I’ve now been told I have to stop my apixaban for Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday morning . If I hadn’t read your post I would have carried on taking them. I asked the nurse if I could have double sedation lol but she said no. I’ll let you know how I get on.
