If you can, watch BBC1 East Midlands Today programme at 6.30pm. Dr. Ng is talking about a new procedure to map the heart which is supposed to help with the diagnosis of AF. Sorry, I don't know any more as just found out.

How did you get a referral to Dr Sandilands?

in reply to Suanna

By accident I guess. I was miss diagnosed by a useless GP, said that I had asthma caused by a virus! 6 weeks later I was no better so went to see one of the senior GP's at the practice. He instantly said I had Af and sent me to get an ECG at Glenfield hospital.

The ECG showed fast AF, with HR of over 195 so they sent me straight to CDU then on to a heart ward. I was under the senior cardiologist although I only saw junior doctors for 10 days and they just increased the bisoprolol a small amount daily but could not get my HR down below 140 even on 12.5 mg Bisoprolol. They could'nt cardiovert me because I had been in AF for weeks.

I'd had enough and took off my monitor and went for a walk around the hospital. I had a bit of a breakdown and a passing nurse spotted me and came over to see what was wrong. told her my story as she led me back to the ward. 10 minutes later Dr Sandilands was sitting on the edge of my bed and introduced himself as the electrician. Right then I knew I had the right man on my case!. Turns out that the nurse was one of the rhythm team and Alistair was her boss. At last, some answers he explained what was happening and what the plan was, changed my drugs , sent me for a echocardiogram and within 2 hours I was back home.

He was not impressed that I was on the ward and nobody had informed the rhythm team.

He has been absolutely brilliant, the treatment plan was cardioversion and amiodorone , which I had to stop taking and eventually an ablation 2 and a half years ago.

He always answered my emails when I had concerns, often with a quick phone call and him squeezing me in for a quick appointment, he even came in on his day off to get me discharged as it was the easter weekend, he cycled in, checked me over and went off to search for an ultrasoubd maching to do an echo cardiogram himself rather than waiting for hours fo radiololgy to do it. He knows how to work the system and get the job done. I owe him an awful lot

He sounds brilliant, and such good luck that you were under his care. I will ask for a referral to him when I see a cardiologist in Sep. Thank you for taking the trouble to respond in detail. Kind regards.

Yes, he was a true professional and I feel very lucky that he was my ep and did my ablation. I hope you can get on his list, although all the EPs at Glenfield are brilliant
