I take 360mg of diltiazem and have been taking it since April this year it’s never caused me ankle swelling before well not that I no off. I’m currently on holiday at Disney world Florida so doing loads of walking & it’s very hot I noticed today after all the walking my ankles was swollen it was horrific but bad enough to scar me one was worse than the other. I no this can be a side effect. I’m worried should I be? Maybe I need to take it easy a little?

I am on 180mg diltiazem have been the last 10 years, I always get swollen ankles and feet more so in the warm/hot weather one is worst than the other and can be a bit painful too... I tend to use cold compress and put my feet up. They tend to go down a bit after a night in bed.. Try and put your feet up in the afternoon if you can... Pam

Thanks so much you’ve made me feel at ease. When I noticed I freaked out I have anxiety with all to do with my heart and taking the dilatiazem interrupted my sleep too because I was worry. Yes me too my left seems worse than my right.

Thanks again x

I think it is the change, all the walking, hot/ humid weather, fluid goes with gravity... down. Probably eating a lot of restaurant food which has more salt. When ever you can, try and lie down with your feet higher than your heart. This will help. If it gets really bad, you might pop into a walk in clinic, they might give you a small prescription for a diuretic( water pill) to help. Once you are back to your normal routine, it should settle down. Make sure you are drinking lots as if you are a little dehydrated, the body clings to the fluid more.

Yes that makes sense and I’ve beem walking over 20,000 steps bit of a shock to the system back home it’s normally around 11,000 and I haven’t really don’t loads of walking and exercise since my ablation in January due to still having Problems. It did go down over night I slept with my legs raised but there swollen again now but I’m trying not

To worry. Thanks so much for taking your time to reply it’s greatly appreciated x

Good that they go down at night

Its probably also due to the long haul flight. It always happens to me a few days after flying. Sometimes takes 2 -4 weeks before back to normal.

Yes it’s settled down a lot now thank god. But strangely after my SVT has come back after having a ablation 7 months ago :(
