Can bloating cause increased HR and heart pounding?

Hey guys, so yeah the question is basically that.

I didn't eat particularly late but I did eat a couple of haribo sweets at about 8:50 which is not something I'd normally do. About 45 minutes on I noticed my heart was pounding quite hard and was going faster than usual. I also felt a little flushed and just 'weird'.

I'm aware of the vagus nerve and stomach and heart connection but don't think I've ever experienced it like this before though.

A couple of misspellings!

The old Vagus nerve has a lot to answer for Dave. Quite a common problem.

Yeah, as soon as I've 'listened' to my body for a while I start saying to myself 'oh, it's the bloody vagus nerve/stomach/heart combo again.

I kinda of assumed that was the problem, just good to get what is basically a confirmation from a few people! Knowing it's something stupid I've done makes me feel better, as I can make sure it doesn't happen again.

Thanks BobD

Dave, just adding to Bob's comments ... yes, it will/can/maybe/ is back to the relationship between vagus nerve, digestive system and heart PLUS type of food, size of meal, time you eat. Throw in any food intolerances you may have and big heartbeat jackpot 😃

Yeah, I've never had an issue with what I ate before but I also have to take Omeprazole in the mornings these days so I make sure my last meal is by 6:30pm usually. Stupid of me to eat anything at all that late in the day, especially something like that!

As everyone says, vagus nerve. You could try probiotics which increases the necessary bacteria. I think it helps.

I may well do that, thanks!

Sugar and artificial additives are great triggers. I certainly wouldn't eat Haribo sweets again if I were you. Have you still got the pack to see what they contain?

Lots of people have said that bloating is a trigger for their heart arrhythmia. It could have easily been a combination of both things food and sweets.

Something else I've become quite aware of recently, is not breathing deeply enough to maintain our heart rhythm. Sometimes we're so absorbed in what we're doing that our breathing can become too shallow and then our heart protests.

Yeah, to be honest, once I'd realised it was likely the sweets that had caused it the first thoughts I had were 'either they contain aspartame (which I can't have) or they were out of date or maybe spoiled'. Stupid on my part and they've gone in the bin this morning.

I will often allow myself a piece of dark chocolate or two in the evenings, as I've read that that can help with digestion, but I usually have my last meal by 7pm at the very latest.

Bloating seems a new, big trigger for me. But funny you should mention not breathing deeply, as I'm currently suffering from an unexplainable breathing issue too! I'm working on my breathing with yoga and meditation at the moment.

I am definitely affected by stomach issues. My Tum has been upset for four days and my hearts reacted badly in response. I would steer clear of anything which upsets your equilibrium food or drink wise.

I posted this a while back but have a look a condition called "Roemheld Syndrome" on google.

There are also a number of good books on the gut one being.... "GUT" by Guilia Enders.

also take a look at a condition called Candida Albicans.

Hope it helps

Hello Dave, I also experience some high resting heartbeat if I eat too much sugar or a fat combo!

Ah, so it could be the sugar. Weirdly I don't notice it at any other time through the day, but maybe I don't usually eat anything with that level of sugar in it haha.

I have just downloaded a couple of books on managing the vagus nerve from kindle....I figure if I know more about it I may be able to stop the panic that accompanies an episode 🤞🤞😃

Yeah, you'll have to let us know how that goes. I'd love to have a greater understanding, but then it'd help more if the medical community had one as well!

I think Haribo is a trigger for my AF too, although I haven’t experimented to find out, I try to not eat them anymore! Sad times!

Really? Wow, that's mad. Maybe it's the sugar content in the sweets? I'm not sure that anything else I eat has that much sugar to be honest with you.

I also have to avoid artifical sweeteners, like aspartame. Well, basically all the 'A's'..
