5 Shocks and it still didn't work..

I have had the week from hell. Sunday morning I woke up heart racing and in afib..Went Sunday night to ER they did cardioveraion and it worked on the first try. So did the other one I had in 2017.Yesterday was different I woke up at 3 am afib again..went to ER last night..5 shocks and I didn't convert.. My blood tests show I am slightly hyperthyroidism again so maybe that's it. Pretty disappointed though and pretty upset about the whole thing..Have you had a successful caeioversion after one didn't work?

If one worked last Sunday then there is a chance another might work if they try again. I`m not a medic so that`s just IMHO.

Personally I would speak to the doctor about starting a medication like Flecainide. This might help the CV to be successful if you dose up for month or so before trying another CV.

Just a suggestion from a non-medic but certainly worth asking your GP about.

Thanks for responding. My worry about that drug is it is pretty toxic from everything In have read so that makes me nervous. I had a cardio version last Sunday worked on first attempt..than it didn't work 5 days later so I was puzzeled

I have to say that I started in Flecainide pill in the pocket and now take it daily. I don't find it at all toxic. In fact, I can't think of a single symptom of taking it - other than hugely reduced attacks. Hyperthyroidism (ie too high a dose of T3) is a massive trigger for me so that is certainly with investigating. Good luck.

I have been using flecainide as a PIP very successfully for about 15 months which never last more than 2 hours as a result but my episodes of AF are happening more frequently now and I feel I should try taking it regularly as it says in the info in the packet. I am very sensitive to drugs - (the lowest dose of bisoprolol was too much for me and I find the lowest dose of apixaban tires me out too though it doesn't reduce my heart rate dangerously as the bisoprolol did!) so I would be most grateful if you could give me advice on how to take it and then we can compare notes on how we are doing- like before breakfast (when on empty stomach or?)

Sorry- my reply to scorpio 10 got sent to you by mistake (not mine) good luck with whatever you try - perhaps the doctors will eventually catch up with the fact we are all different and help us to find the drugs that are right for us rather than dishing out the same stuff to all of us and warning us off things that might well be helpful- Good Luck with the struggle!

Treating the thyroid may well affect the AF as it is an underlying cause of arrythmia. Is this recent diagnosis or have you had hyperthyroidism for a while?

In was diagnosed in 2017 with Hyperthyroidism Graves Disease. Meds aren't stabilizing it is I will probably endbup having radioactive iodine uptake. Thanks for responding!

Yes, any slight over supply of T3 sends me into AF and it's really hard to control - I'd think that sorting out the hyperthyroid must surely be a priority.

I had a cardioversion recently around end of april...it lasted a week then i went back into arrythmia..i have come across many other members on this site and they have had several cv

I must admit i was really down after my cv failed and i have only just come to terms with the fact that afib is a chronic condition so success and failure is relative when it comes to afib

It does help that i dont have really bad effects...palpitations etc but i think that is because im only 51 so in the years to come...i dunno?

Im on bisoprolol and apixaban plus blood pressure meds so the danger of stroke is low but i do get anxious about the lack of info from my nhs practitioners

Thanks for your input. I get shortnessbof breath and some heart pounding which really sucks. I have twice converted naturally both times at the gym...That's where I am heading now
