Eliquis and Q10

Hi - I am on Eliquis 5mg 2X/day. I have been told by a nutritionist that Q10 Coenzyme would be helpful. I have also read on here several of you suggesting it - however on researching side effect/interactions I read that it may cause bleeds. Now I am confused. Any insights?

Where & what did you read? Obviously Eliquis being an a/c will exacerbate a bleed, not cause one but never seen a contraindication for CoQ10 with or without a/c. Was it saying it was the combination & why?

I think most EPs, nutritionists, GPs etc would recommend CoQ10 - especially if you also take statins as they are known to deplete CoQ10. or have heart conditions or over 50 ish.

I’ve been taking CoQ10 for about 15 years & Eliquis for about 4 - never had an issue.

I take both no problems and cleared it with the cardiologist !

Cholesterol-lowering drugs such as lovastatin and pravastatin inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, required for synthesis of cholesterol as well as CoQ10, resulting in a decreased serum CoQ10 [Mortensen et al., 1997]. Beta blockers propranolol and metoprolol [Kishi et al., 1977], and phenothiazines and tricyclic antidepressants have been shown to inhibit CoQ10-dependent enzymes [Moreno-Fernández et al., 2012]. CoQ10's effects on platelet function may increase the risk of bleeding in patients taking antiplatelet drugs such as aspirin [Serebruany et al., 1997]. On the other hand, since it acts like vitamin K, it may counteract the anticoagulant effects of warfarin [Singh et al., 2007]. CoQ10 may have an additive antihypertensive effect when given with antihypertensive drugs [Bonakdar and Guarneri, 2005]. CoQ10 may improve beta-cell function and enhance insulin sensitivity, which may reduce insulin requirements for diabetic patients [Hodgson et al., 2002].

I got the following cleared to take with Eliquis by my ablation doc, regular cardiologist and the pharmacist: COQ10, fish oil (antler farms), D-3, and magnesium (glycinate).
