Well I agree with most of what you say, especially SAGA - to be avoided at all costs. We booked on a cruise and took out their cover but I had 2 blue lights to hospital in the 6 months prior to the cruise so rang them to declare. They immediately revoked my cover - 3 DAYS BEFORE THE TRIP! I ended up finding cover with company quoted below - who were about £10 cheaper anyway.
Having said that, I don’t believe the ‘prey’ on older people - as you age the risks of a claim increases as do the costs of the claim. It’s a risk profiling exercise and company decision as to what risk they wish to take and what not. Whilst on the cruise one passenger had to be air-lifted from the boat - imagine covering those costs? It’s a complex algorithm based on previous medical history, age etc which calculates risk and it is also a company policy as to your target market so you are right in your conclusion - shop around and get the best deal for you and stick to the companies which specialise in covering older people with medical conditions. Personally I always use travelinsurance4medical - same company as WorldFirst - excellent value - they offer 3 levels of cover with appropriate differences in prices.
