Does any heart play up as your about to fall asleep

Hey ,

Since my ablation back in December most nights before I’m about to fall asleep my heart either starts to race really fast or I start having lots of ectopics in a row I can feel it in my throat almost feels like someone’s got my heart squeezing and letting it go . Does any one else experience this just before you fall asleep ? Really appreciate any replies .

Many thanks Michelle x

I've had that problem, it comes and goes. My heart does what I call it's 'party piece' - runs quickly through all the arrhythmias it knows then settles down. I think it is the effect of going from vertical to horizontal putting a bit of pressure on it for some reason. It is more likely to happen if you are a bit unwell eg slight lung congestion, stomach upset.

I like that expression 'party piece' . I shall remember it each time I feel that little thump or wriggle or quiver. These little gems all help to reduce anxiety.

Thank you for your reply ,

Reassuring to know I’m not the only one . It so is like a party piece before it settles . It makes sense what you say . The things we put up with 🙈 .

I agree with what Buffafly has written ! I use to have this quite regularly. However now 6 years since 3rd ablation my heart seems to hsve settled down .....it's only taken 26 years 😀😃

Hi Thompson123

My heart doesn't always go erratic when I go to bed, but I can wake up in the night and it's irregular. Sometimes I wake in the morning sweating and my heart is irregular. We have to put up with a lot with af but at least we are still alive. There is never any sence to this scourge of af and it can affect everyone different.

Good luck with your bad luck.

Regards Flyer.

Funny really,if it wasn't annoying but I have had an af attack today while travelling on the bus with my wife. I had to get off the bus before my destination and send for an ambulance. Was taken to hospital and given checks before being discharged. I am now being referred back to the cardiologist who had just discharged me for a possible ablation. Happy days. The joys of af. The good news, I'm still alive.

Best wishes

Yes, I've had this happen. I try to take deep breaths but it doesn't help much. I've always wondered why it happens then.

Exactly that Thompson123. I have that every night. When I'm preparing for bed, ie washing, cleaning teeth, etc, I try to ignore what I think might be coming. I call it acrobats (thumping, ectopics, etc), but I lie slightly on my right side half on my back and these days (only 15 months after my ablation!!!!!) I do manage to go to sleep. However if I get hot in the night (no comments) I can feel the uneven type acrobats starting again.

I do hope you feel better soon, likewise everyone, but what a pain especially when the throat starts as well.

Hi Tapanac

Thank you for your reply I honestly thought I was alone . Taking to friends and family they try but just don’t get it . If I’m startled And wake up in a hot sweat in the night my heart goes into one and can take hours to settle .

Somedays I’m exhausted With little sleep I have 2 babies to care for .

I do hope your good night continue.

Best wishes X

Hi! I am pretty new to the group (read so much and do not feel alone now!) and this is my first time commenting. I was diagnosed with paroxysmal afib in Dec during an episode at 36 years old, had a similar episode previously at 34 with a lot of funny beats in between. There is no underlying cause to my afib/otherwise healthy. I experience what you are describing sometimes and just did a 48 hr EKG over the weekend to see what it is (both what I believe are ectopics and what feels like my heart suddenly racing for a few seconds at rest, mostly at night). Both thankfully did happen during the EKG so I am really curious what the doctor will tell me in a few days. So grateful to have found this group! Wishing the best to all of you.

Hey bikelady

Thank you for your reply I really could’ve written what you’ve written myself .

I’m have the same problems.

I’m 36 too Iv had 3 ablations one for SVT , AVNRT , and AFib .

It’s so reassuring to know I’m not the only one . I’m dread going to bed some times even tho I’m so exhausted .

I’m worried sometimes that there’s something extremely wrong with my heart . Good luck with your results let us know how you get on

Many thanks Michelle

I was diagnosed at 40, I’ve been surprised at how many I’ve met who have AFib so young, as my doc tells me it’s rare

I have definitely had this experience. My paroxysmal AFib has only ever happened when I was drifting off to sleep. It’s well managed with meds but every now and then I will have trouble with PVCs at the same time. Does yours flare up worse when you’ve had a large or spicy meal before bed? The vagus nerve can really make the heart go wacky.

Recently I had a bad night with lots PVCs at bedtime, but I was able to catch what was going on with my Kardia device, which brought me some peace of mind.

Thank you got you reply I’m so pleased I’v found this site . I thought I was going crazy . My Kardia too has been able to catch lots of ectopics sometimes it says afib possibility but when I sent off to be analysed comes back with multiple topics

There so soul destroying I dread going to bed . It’s exhausting.

Best wishes I hope you have many one good night .

I’ve been so grateful to find this site as well, makes me feel less alone. I told my husband that I feel like I’m in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies sometimes, that’s how much I dread trying to go to sleep! Hope you have a restful night

Although my AF has happened when going to bed & in the early hours but I find happens most when I wake up. I get runs of fast & ectopic beats & feeling cold & shivery even in hot weather (when we have it!) Lasts few minutes up to half an hour.

I get cold and shivery when I have AFib or even a bad run of PVCs. Sometimes I can’t hold my hands still enough to use my Kardia. My doctor thinks it’s anxiety

Nice to feel less alone

Interesting your thinks it's anxiety. I know what you mean regarding attacks of af & shaking - it's horrible & takes ages to stop no matter how hard you try & relax.

Hot water is my best friend when this happens!
