What does POTS mean? In the US, it means plain old telephone service.

Thank you for checking out the definition.

Based on your explanation of POTS I wonder if alcohol thins your blood sufficiently to reduce the effects of your condition I.e the blood flows better due to the thinning effect that alcohol provides. Either way it's a win win so enjoy the cure 👌

I'm not surprised, Malorie. I'd once been in AF for weeks and went to a neighbours for a pre Christmas get-together. When offered some Dutch wine (never have any wine since AF, as it's a trigger for me) I was persuaded to try just a little' which I did. It was so nice that I had more and more. A neighbour sitting next to me said you look really well and without thinking I answered, I feel it. Yes, I'd gone back into sinus rhythm! I just know it was the wine!

Hi Malorie - I don’t think it ‘cured’ your POTS but it certainly seemed to have kicked started your heart. I think it is reasonable to assume that alcohol does help ‘sticky’ platelets in the blood affectively thinning it, and sticky platelets are very common in people with POTS, especially if you are hyper mobile as well. It’s not only about your heart, it affects your blood vessels as well as they dilate and that is what causes pooling in the lower limbs, along with gravity. Your blood vessels are not able to push the blood against the gravity = low BP = heart struggles.

Just be really careful though as alcohol will also dilate blood vessels even more which could be dangerous for you if you are standing. Drink plenty of water as a preventative and never stand for long periods, walking is OK, it’s standing which causes problems. Also watch your salt intake - check with your doctor but recommended level for POTS patients = 6g/day.

Very please you are feeling better, long may it continue. CD

I don’t know - but it certainly helps you to relax & forget about it for a bit 😂 (occasionally of course)!

I’m often at a loss with many abbreviated capitals for the full meaning. Should always write full word and bracket with capitals. Thanks for explaining though.

Perhaps it doesn’t heal your condition, but it certainly has helped to relax you and perhaps that’s why the racing of the heart subsided.

It is true that it feels great that you can forget the condition you’re in for just a little while. At that moment you feel on top of the world.

Cheers 🥂!

I doubt it’s a cure. It might have relaxed you, or perhaps increasing the heart rate (which occurs when drinking alcohol) somehow helped the heart to go back to sinus rhythm.

It’s getting rid of your anxiety ! Alcohol does that , it’s a depressant, mine also go with a glass of wine or two , no harm in it , better than taking pills ! Don’t beat yourself up !

Alcohol lowers your BP and slows the heart and relaxes you , that’s why it’s so popular , not too much though, that doesn’t do any good at all !
