Osteoporosis.

I've just been diagnosed with Osteoporosis. My GP prescribed medications which, in her words can "enlarge your bones, and your jaw".

I'm looking closely in the mirror every day now, expecting to see Desperate Dan looking back at me 😂😂

Oh get over yourself, it's just a bit of gallow's humour. It's my illness I'm joking about. I'm not making fun of anyone else!!

Good heavens...i was hardly being serious ..hence the emoji ! Must remember to keep my remarks to myself in future. I'll stay away for a while. I object to your remarks.

Sorry to hear that Gwersey, but your Desperate Dan comment really made me laugh. Didn't he used to eat cow pies, or something like that, perhaps best to keep off them!

Every time I hear someone has been diagnosed with osteoporosis I have a little scream.IF we(and esp. ladies) were prescribed Cacium and Vit D at around 45 as we moved towards the menopause many of us would not develop osteoporosis.....and think of the enormous saving to the NHS re. reducing the need for hip replacement and caring for those that are likely to fall due to fragile bones?

My mum,who is 87, fell and broke her hip last year. The surgeon who operated on her told her that her hip didn't just break, it shattered, and if she has daughters, tell them to have a bone scan. Both my sisters' scans were fine, no bone thinning. My scan showed Osteoporosis however. I've advised them both to start with vit.D and calcium supplements. I'm post menopausal but they're a bit younger than me so perhaps can delay the possible onset of Osteoporosis by a few years.

It is a condition that is often not considered til someone breaks a bone. I don't think the research backs medication for everyone. It would be better if we were educated about how to maintain our bone health as we age and to understand our personal risk factors. There is heaps of info on the osteoporosis site and also the FRAX tool sheffield.ac.uk/FRAX/ to give an idea of your risk.

Vit K2 should be taken as well to make sure calcium goes where it should ie bones and teeth and not where it should not ie arteries , kidneys and breast tissue. If aged full fat cheeses were consumed in sufficient quantities much of this K2 and calcium could come through diet. Too much calcium supplementation to avoid osteoporosis been shown to be problematic for other areas of health.

I hope your GP signposted you to the osteoporosis society. Do go to the site (They've just become Royal) there is lots of information.

I have a friend to whom Prolia was recommended but she's had no fractures, just the diagnosis of osteo...The side effects sound nasty, but I know someone else who's used it to good effect for five years!

I've only ever had fractures and funnily enough it's my ribs that fractured, caused by coughing when I had pneumonia. They're fractured several times over the years when I've had chest infections. And once they fractured when I was in a flood of tears over my beloved dog dying.
