Hello Fairycakes, assuming you have just been diagnosed with AF, your GP has prescribed Bisoprolol to help reduce your heart rate. One of the symptoms of AF is breathlessness and Bisoprolol can cause side effects such as tiredness and breathlessness so in the early days, sometimes it can be difficult to determine which is causing what! GP's normally prescribe the minimum dose (1.25mg) and then gradually increase it over time until an optimum dose is reached. People react differently to these drugs but very often, side effects can reduce as the body adapts to the medication, but if there is no change, you need to discuss at your appointments with the cardiologist because there are alternatives that can be used. Between now and you appointment you should familiarise yourself with all the information about AF which you will find on the AF Association webpages. This will help you to understand the complexities of the condition and enable you to ask questions which apply to you. Also find out about anticoagulation and the CHADsVASc scoring process because if necessary, you may need to be protected against the possible risk of stroke. I don't want to alarm you but this is important. Also if necessary, look at lifestyle improvements as these can make an incredible difference.

Sundays are generally quiet but hopefully others here will come up with other suggestions I'm sure but please try to find out as much about AF as you can before seeing your cardiologist.....good luck.

HI

Bisoprolol dies indeed slow you down, but it does come in dfferent doses, so your GP or your consultant (But you see your GP more often...) may be able to reduce your dose. Worrying? Its natural, but hang in there, when we hear of things wrong with the heart we naturally worry as we've only got one of them, but as far as AF is concerned its quite a popular ailment and some of the best people have it.

Best

Yes it can cause all the problems you mention and more.

We might have AF but we deserve a decent quality of life. If Bisopropol side effects are stopping you from having that, speak to your GP and ask them to prescribe an alternative.

Hi

I too take bisoprolol (2.5mg twice daily) and am totally unaware of any effects! I liken AF to how my motor is running - sometimes I am in top gear - other times I drop down to 5th or 4th etc ... When my motor started cutting out I got a Pacemaker and life goes on. When in AF you may well be breathless (I find very damp days harder) and sometimes have to take things a bit slower - but we should all do that anyway!

Read a lot and listen and make sure you understand everything your medics say and all should be well !
