Beer vs Liquor and Paroxymal AFIB

Does anybody know why liquor seems to cause AFIB more than Beer? I know drinking in general is a trigger for AFib episodes. But summer is coming and everybody enjoys a cold beer every now and again. Out of all my instances with AFIB and having to be cardiovert It has been from liquor. Drinking a mixed drink or taking a shot at a bachelor party etc. If I have a few beers grilling out. Or a few beers out with friends nothing happens. I have only had AFIB twice in 5 years and both times was because of liquor. I don’t say alcohol because beer doesn’t do it. Anyways just seeing if anybody else has had this experience.

Hello! I think it's the concentrated shot of alcohol in shorts, beer or ale takes longer to have an effect. If I drink wine without a little lemonade or soda I'm tempting fate!

You and me both. If I sip on cold beer on a nice summer day I have no problems. Also alcohol speeds up my heart rate quite a bit and I don’t know why. Seems like it should slow it down??

The answer is ... not to drink any alcohol, that’s what I have chosen. I hate being in Afib

I will have more ablations till they fix it before I stop having a few cold beers. I enjoy boating, golfing, grilling and having cold drinks while doing it lol. You only live once is my motto afib or not.

Hi there 😊 I can’t touch beer or champagne. Any alcohol with bubbles in immediately gives me palpitations, I don’t go into AFib but my heart starts going crazy after a mouthful. However white wine and soda doesn’t?!?! Very weird indeed 🥴

Sorry Edstiffler13 but are you for real? Your narrative would think otherwise.

Here's my theory: alcohol causes a serious hypoglycemic reaction. It's basically very high carbs (high sugar). The body cannot metabolize that kind of sugar so what does it do: it makes the heart work harder to get rid of it and thus, serious palpitations and aggravated Afib are the result. Bottom line, stay away from hard alcohol.

Makes sense. I’m guessing liquor had a lot more sugar in it.
