PAF with Low Heart Rate ??

In the past I've had occasional lone PAF episodes with heart rate up to over 200 and intense, nasty symptoms - I just take Bisoprolol and Flecainide as PIPs which work well. And my resting heart rate is usually 52-60. But the other night I couldn't sleep and was feeling a bit fluttery so I did a Kardia reading and to my surprise it showed possible AF with a heart rate of 59. Within a few minutes it went back to normal. The same thing happened this morning - feeling a bit unstable, so I did a Kardia reading which showed possible AF with a heart rate of 73. Then my heart rate went up to 93 normal and within a few minutes was back down to 59 normal. I didn't know that you could have AF with a heart rate under 100. Has anyone else experienced this? Or know anything about it? Thanks.

Pure vagal AF is commonly associated with slowish heart rates. Adrenergic AF with very fast rates typically. Often people have a mixture of the two apparently. As you know Bisoprolol will slow the heart rate in sinus rhythm as well as AF.

I had primarily vagal AF with rates in the range 60-120, though I was on Sotalol then. Maybe you have a mixture but with predominantly adrenergic AF

Thanks for the article, really helpful - I've read it and the comments under it and it makes perfect sense. I already take CoQ10 and Magnesium Taurate and I know that lying on my left side is not good. I also suspect dehydration as part of the recent cause. Will keep an eye on what I eat and drink in the evenings and any stresses.

Mine has always been fast AF but has been slowed down by drugs (sadly not eliminated). I have had low Kardia “possible AF” readings. Over the past few weeks, according to my Fitbit (which is not a medical grade monitor) my heart rate overnight has been going as low as 40. Today I had a gastroscopy and when I was hooked up to the monitor after the procedure my heart rate sat around 40-42 but dipped down as low as 36. I have been in AF most of the day. I’ll see what my EP says when I see him next Tuesday. In the meantime I’ll keep an eye on your responses to this post.

Ah! Now I see we were in contact a while back. We seem to have a similar varying experience of PAF and are dealing with it in a similar fashion. Perhaps we could meet up some time if you live around Stroud. I had some weird readings like yours on my Kardia yesterday evening. Would love to know if there are triggers for it so as to avoid them but not worrying about it too much seems to be the best policy!

Yes, I saw the message and I made three attempts to reply. Each time a notice came up saying I had to put in the name of at least one recipient but I had put your name in on all three occasions!!!

You mentioned this previously. Did you have it investigated?

Hi. Yes you can have AF with a normal HR, mine was 69-76 and I suddenly started to feel extremely tired this went on for weeks, in the end I had to go the GP. They done a ECG and found I far to many ectopic beats so they sent me to the cardiologist at the hospital. Over next 4 weeks I had to go back for ECG,s and angioplasty checks. They seen it there on the screen AF, they put me on Rivaroxan. They also changed my beta-blocker

Ah - maybe this is why I've been feeling so tired recently! Did changing your beta blocker fix the AF? Which one are you on now? Thanks

Hi they put me on bisoporal. No it didn't cure the AF lol. But like my cardiologist said AF is dangerous when you DON'T know you have it. Cut right back on salt intake, take the blood thinners and just get on with your life. I have a friend who has had it for years and he has run the London marathon for the past 9 years.
