I was told when doing this to sit down for at least five minutes first. then take two readings five minutes apart and discard the first one. Ony worry about that reading. Ideally your readings should be less than 150/90, even better at 140/80 and these days doctors like you to be below 130/70 by which time I start to feel dizzy anyway lol

Yes it is higher than ideal so why not ring you doctor and discuss. It may well be worrying about it so try to stay well relaxed.

Hi Bushy, some good advice and the only thing I would add is that following a rigid regime in itself, is often enough to cause elevated readings. Try taking 3 or 4 readings whilst reading or listening to music to help neutralise any anxiety which might produce more accurate readings which hopefully will be a bit lower....

Not medically trained but I have just been to see my GP last week over my blood pressure. I monitor my BP not least because my omron detects arrhythmia.

I had actually mostly weaned myself off the monitoring in June after my 3 months post ablation appointment and stopping all meds. , and the fact that this had not resulted in any increase in blood pressure. ( I was on a CCB which reduce BP, although I was on it for rate control of afib).

Then in July onwards, I had a parent bereavement, problems with the will, trying to sell the parents house, a problem with my pension, and a project at work going badly. Result stress and some effects on the BP

I took my records to my GP last weej. My highest reading in the period was about 160/107, the lowest 117/72. My question was is this a problem, as I did not think i could have a problem as often I had readings lower than 135/85 . But what I thought was a big range may be a problem. . On one evening I was over 150 and an hour later, after doing some exercise I was under 120!

The doctor said I do too many readings ,so in future keep it to 3 a week, but she is not worried at the range which she advised was entirely normal. (Obviously you have been asked to keep a detailed record.)

I suffer from "white coat " syndrome even measuring myself(?? How - stress??) so the first reading I generally discard. However many days more recently the second one is no better. I have found that exercise does reduce the BP quite a lot. I go running or cycling, but even a long walk causes quite a reduction .

Best wishes.

I have white coat syndrome and BP anxiety. My BP is usually high when the doctor or assistant first takes it.. some where around 140/100. During the visit, if I call down.. she may get a reading of 135/80. That is the best I can do in the doctors office. I have had crazy high readings as well and I am on meds, but I try to take it at home periodically, but I do agree that you need to take a few readings and take an average. 1 high reading does not mean you are at that number all day. BP is definitely something that those of us that have GAD have to deal with because it can definitely go up when we are anxious.
