Problems getting my drivers license back

Hi everyone, I had a stroke 18months ago followed by seizures the next day, and I was told by the DVLA that my license would be revoked for twelve months. During that year I was then diagnosed with Altral Fibrillation and highper tension which is being controlled by medication. I was expecting to receive my license back by mid June this year. At the end of August I sent them an email asking what was happening with my drivers license and if and when I would be getting it back? September, I then received another questionnaire to fill in because of my second diagnosis of AF and highper tension. I have chased the DVLA twice since and was told it is with the medical team. It is so frustrating because I am a self employed cleaner and I live in a very small village. My mother has Alzheimer’s and I use to help my father care for her every week, but it is two bus rides away which can take up to 2 hours to get there. Will I ever get my license back? Has anyone else had problems getting feedback from the DVLA?

I’ve never had any problems and they have always been very helpful BUT - they are probably waiting on the replies from your doctors and in my experience that is what takes the time as filling in the papaerwork for DVLA is often low on the doctor’s priorities - or even worse - the paperwork gets lost. My suggestion would be to contact the doctors’ secretary and ask them if they could check to their records to see if they received the paperwork, they have replied - if so on which Day was it posted/emailed etc and if not what can you/they do to progress the process.

I would always recommend making friends with your doctors’ Secretary - don’t complain to them as they have the power to put you at the bottom of the pile!

Good luck. I had to wait 6 months to reapply for my licence back but the whole process took 10 months as I had to go for sight tests before DVLA would process my application.

Thank you for your reply CDreamer. I spoke to my Cardiologist secretary last week. She was very helpful, printing off a fact sheet from the DVLA and had confirmed that they have not received anything from the DVLA. She suggested that I should ring them again. My GP’s secretary has also not received anything from them. When I contacted the DVLA last week, the man said that they have a back log and are working through by date order. It is two months now since my second questionnaire was sent. I don’t want to keep calling them but I would like to know what is going on.

When I have phoned they just say it is with the medical team. This might sound obvious but did you ask to speak to the medical team? In the past I have just taken the word of the people taking the call. Maybe I should email again as the reply was more informative. Thank you mavisrich
