Morning people.. I went to cardio unit last year after having a episode of af.. it lasted a few hours and went away.. I’m a very keen cyclist doing. Many miles up to 250 miles per week.. had scan and all tests said heart was ok.. he signed me of as I’m not in af.. now moving along I’ve had a few episodes.which have gone away in roughly 30 mins all brought on by high intensity riding with my heart rate gong over 160 bpm sets it of I was prescribed 5 mg of diospol when I first ever had it... the nurse said it was ok to take when I’m doing a long ride I normally have a small bite since then I’ve been ok.. I’ve never had it in normal day to day life.. is anyone else like this.. I’m don’t worry about it..
Part time af: Morning people.. I went... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Part time af
Athletes often give themsleves AF due to over working the heart. Interestingly it is the old farts brigade who suffer most as they don't stop and detrain at say age 35 to 40 like professional athletes.
Ha ha bob yes I’m 55 going on 20.. just cut back on my heart rate by 20 % .. I don’t get myself in a flap when it spins out of control always hits about 200 bpm I stop riding gangs around 140 ish then kicks back in to normal rhythm... if I’m miles from anywhere and I’m on my own I just carry on riding very steady watching my heart rate.. it’s one of those things I’m not stoping exercising cardio nurse says carry on.. hardly drink eat pretty healthy.. be positive... don’t let it rule your life .
Similar experience and sympoms to me. I believe I've had AF for years when out cycling, (I'm 67 now) but was only formally diagnosed more recently. High intensity work and hillclimbing is almost guaranteed to put up my HR > 165BPM, some days more often than others. I dropped a group level on my Sat. club rides, and try to restrict my effort to avoid going into AF, but it doesn't always work, although it doesn't bother me if I keep pedalling!
AF usually stops when I rest. Consultant recommended reducing exercise effort, ablation not recommended, and anti-coagulation (I chose Warfarin).
Same and similar.. not ruduced my group level yet lol... just pick my rides... if I’m going flat and fast and it starts creeping up to 150 + I just knock it back.. if it goes into af I keep riding very slowly depending how high my HR is... on a long ride at the half way point I just have a little bite of the pill in the pocket... reducing the risk.. so far so good.
Suggest you read "the Haywire heart" by Dr John mandrola /chris case/lennard zinn(professional cyclist) . It is subtitled 'How too much exercise can kill you and what you can do to protect your heart'. It is very thought provoking.
Hi thanks for that less I know the better I feel.. what will be will be.. I’m not stopping exercise lol
You may need to have a heart scan. I assume your cardiologist has carried out in ECG. Athletes often develop an enlarged heart, which in turn causes a breakdown/alteration in the electrical pathway across the heart, which in turn causes an increase in afib. The book I mentioned earlier has numerous case studies which look at this problem.
