Hi Everyone. I am just after some reassurance. I had my first ablation under GA last Saturday which lasted over 5 hours. It was successful and I am back in NSR. I developed a chest infection and was kept in an extra night. When I came out of hospital I had a bit of bruising on my inner thigh which I thought was completely normal. However, it has now spread and is covering most of my inner thigh down to just above my knee. It is really black. Is this normal and should I just wait for it to go away? I have been resting but not sitting down all the time as my EP told me keeping moving would help clear my chest. Any advice/reassurance welcome.
Post ablation: Hi Everyone. I am just... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Post ablation
I had my ablation last Friday and my groin is the same as yours. As long as there are no sign of infection at the entry points, I believe extensive bruising is quite normal.....
I remember a lot of bruising after one ablation and almost nothing after the other but a haematoma developing which seemed to grow and grow and took weeks to go.
All evidently perfectly normal - as long as the area of bruising doesn’t continue to grow. If you are at all unsure ring the number you were given on leaving the hospital or consult your doctor.
If I could have lifted mine off and put it on canvas I am sure I could have sold it as a lost Jackson Pollock. Work on the principle that when the bruising fades to grey your heart is just beginning to heal. Don't forget to read our fact sheet on Recovery from an Ablation if you have not already done so.
Is there a possibility of over anticoagulation? What are you on? Do you normally bruise easily?
Thanks. Apixaban. I think I just bruise averagely.
Funny that as I normally bruise easily
For my last ablation I had entry points in each groin and a single stitch put in each
I had no bruising at all !
Really strange. I suppose we are all different.
I had my ablation at the Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital. I had no bruising at all. I understood that they had developed a method of identifying the correct vein using ultrasound technology.
Wow, lucky you. My procedure ended up taking over five hours and I am on apixaban so don't know if that made a different. I also have a lot of bruising on my arm running down into my hand where the contrast was put in for the TOE.
I had a lot of bruising, also on Apixaban. I also got a chest infection and had to go back in for about a week 😟😟. Rest up because with the chest infection on top of the ablation it might take you a little longer to recover xx
Thanks. I am a week on now from the ablation and popped to a supermarket today for a few items and really thought I might have to ask to sit down. I am on pretty strong antibiotics, apixaban, amiodarone, ramipril, atorvastatin and wondering if these are not helping with how I feel. I also have high blood pressure which seems even higher since the procedure. Still on the upside I appear to be out of persistent Afib!
I thought I was going to be like Superwoman after mine. Got that a bit wrong lol. I had mine done at the end of May and still in SR. I’m still tired and get breathless but think this is my medication. Seeing EP at St Thomas’ in 3 weeks so hopefully will stop some of the tablets. It’s very early days for you.
Thanks Drummerswidow. I slept from 2-6pm yesterday and still was in bed by 10.30 and had no trouble sleeping until 8 this morning! Unheard of for me. I did have a little blip yesterday with the afib but only for a very short time. Nevertheless I did shed a tear or two. I agree all the tablets we are on must be affecting us and when I see my EP in a couple of months I will push him about it. I look forward to hearing what your one says.
