Spotty legs

Hi. Just checking! Are red pinprick spots on legs associated with anticoagulants. I’m sure I read somewhere that they are.

If you type red spots in the Search AF Association area, top right of this page and then press Enter on your keyboard, it will throw up a lot of posts relating to this problem and anticoagulants.

HI there - I have this problem as well on my feet mainly - some red patches on legs. It is only when you look closely that you can see that they are tiny red pinprick size spots that merge together and make my feet look red and blotchy. This started about a year ago, I have been Rivaroxaban for over 4 years and had no change of any other medication around the time it started. I have asked GP Heart failure nurse and cardiac clinic but no one has given me an answer. One did think it could be the anticoagulant - I also get some numbness in my feet as well. Someone some time ago mentioned that exercise made it worse but it seems to make no difference to me.

I did think at one time that it might be the Bisoprolol (this might be the cause of the numbness) but 4 months ago I changed to Nebivolol and it has made no difference. So I have to put up with it, not a nice look in the summer lol

Hi Cassie, yes, that’s it exactly. I normally wear trousers for most of the time but am now wearing mostly skirts in this lovely weather. Looks a bit measly, did think of getting some fake tan but with my level of expertise will probably end up looking measly and stripey. Suppose the heat could be making it worse too. Not that I am complaining , I love it and it is certainly making me feel a whole lot better psychologically, amazing what some sunny days can do. Long may they last. X

A peripheral neuropathy type numbness in lower legs can be one of the side effects of Bisoprolol . In my case I already had it as a long term side effect of fluoroquinolones and it worsened considerably when taking Bisoprolol. It improved quite a bit when stopping the Bisoprolol although I had only been on the minimum dosage.

Someone on another site had widespread numbness and found an acupuncture specialist in Surrey who treated her neuropathy with some success.

Me too,my lower legs and feet are covered in red measle spots, had them for a couple of years now,not very nice to look at sometimes they fade to brown, sure it’s the warfarin !

Hi, thanks for replying, well I’m on Apixaban but I do think it’s got something to do with it. Maybe they are a combination of that and age spots.

Hi Pam looks like we could start a spotty legs club! On the positive side I am feeling so much better at the moment spots are a small price to pay I guess.

Hi, I take Apixaban and I noticed small red pin pricks on my tummy and just recently on my arms, only see them with my reader glasses on ,so try not to look at them with them on!! I just put it down to another of those getting older things. I have no idea if I had them before anti coagulants. Like with all things in the getting older process I try to ignore them, but they ain't going away!! Best wishes Kath

I WAS on Bisoprolol and Pradaxa last year, but stopped taking them altogether maybe in the Summer (2017) and haven’t taken any anticoagulant since. In February 2018 I went to Disney World in Florida. I wore athletic style socks folded over. At Disney World, a person walks and walks and stands and walks some more. At night, back at the hotel, I’d take off my shoes and socks and where my socks had covered my ankles was covered in pin prick red spots! It looked like my white socks had turned spotted red. I had no idea what caused it and Bisoprolol or Pradaxa never entered my mind because I hadn’t taken them in months. Now I’m curious. It seems exercise might contribute to the condition. The spots went away a few days after returning home. Interesting.

Hi, yes that is interesting, it also makes me wonder about all these marvellous drugs that can both keep us alive and give us better quality of life, what else are they doing to us and do we ever completely get them out of our systems if we stop taking them. I had chemotherapy in 2007 and whilst I am grateful for the outcome I am still suffering from a few of the side affects. It’s all a bit scary if you think to deeply about them,
