Hi Ahmed
There is a recent post in this group concerning the cost of ablation. That's a good place to start.
Hello Ahmed, it's best if you see an Electrophysiologist (EP) because they are cardiologists who specialise in arrhythmias. If you are thinking of London then Bart's Hospital and the Royal Brompton are worth a look.....but there are many good centres around the UK. There is a section in the AF Association webpage (Patient Information) which lists many hospitals and specialists.....well worth a look.
Ahmed, I had an Abalation and Cardioversion for AF on May 2nd 2018 in the private hopital called The Spire in Southampton where they have a first class cardio team which also serves the Southampton General Hospital Cardio team. The cost of surgery at the Spire was just overr £10,000 but if you google them, and email the Spire they will quote you. You will have to add to this the cost of consultatations and tests prior to and following the op - say another £1,000 plus two nights in hospital. Before the op I had been more or less trapped in the house since the start of this year - in a chair most of the time and I had zero energy, only able to walk yards with a walker. Everything was an effort (I am in my later 70s by the way). I had no quality of life and frankly couldnt have cared if I died. Immediatley after the op it appeared it hadn't worked as I felt little different and for the first two weeks I was perhaps a litte worse than before - still desperatley fatigued and struggling with side effects of the drugs. But my surgeon had warned me not to give up on the op for a month (although he said everyone is different). Sure enough four weeks after the op I started to feel a little better each day and then quite suddenly, one day about 6 weeks ago, I had all my old energy back and now I am back to where I was about five years ago before the problem started with plenty of energy, AF dormant and able to enjoy life again - have been able to drop the drugs abpart from bisoprolol and rivaroxaban anti cogulant which I will be on for life. When I saw my Gp he told me my eyes were sparkling again. I am warned that the condition can recurr so I just hope I can go on like this as long as possible - it feels wonderful to be normal again. Good luck.
There are many - but I would stick to the main centres such as St Bart’s in London or an EP trained by the Bart’s team as Professor Schilling who helped develop ablation therapy and has trained many EPs who now work elsewhere.
As to cost - please factor in costs for any possible complications which can easily triple the cost,
The NHS and the private sector are very separate but our system can be very confusing as you will often have NHS hospitals with private patients and private patients being treated in privately funded facilities.
Being an non contributor to our system, you will pay in both and the costs are usually comparable.
May I suggest you look at BUPA sponsored hospitals - loads of info on their website and a list of Electrophysiologist. If they are BUPA or Nuffield approved facilities you can usually rely on reasonable standards.
Any teaching facilities such as Bart’s will tend to be more expensive.
Good starting places -
