Hi Zezee :-) is this a recent diagnosis.

See the AF website for a definition of the types of AF....

[quote=

AF falls into three categories, which also help to describe the progression of the disease.

Paroxysmal AF – (PAF) episodes that stop within 7 days without treatment;

Persistent AF – episodes lasting longer than 7 days, or less when treated;

Permanent or longstanding persistent AF – continuous AF which has occurred for more than one year.]

It is considered permanent if persistent and can NOT be cardioverted to NSR (Normal synus rhythm.) Simples as as the meekat would say. No matter how long you have had it, if DCCV (DIrect Current Cardioversion ) can revert to NSR it is not permanent.

I have had mine for 18 years now and I thought it was permanent, but using your definition it appears to be merely persistent. So good news first thing in the morning.. Strangely it seems to be settling down into a irregular, but not too bad, pattern.

Permant is defined as when both patient and doctor agree no more treatment and settle for AF continuing.

I have had permanent afib for almost nine years, meaning it never goes away. I have it 24/7. This is what my doctors call permanent afib. I have had two ablations and several cardioversions but nothing gave me long term relief. The only thing that did work for me was a cardioversion followed up with daily use of anti-afib drug. Since I had side effects from drug, I just stay in afib using only a beta-blocker to control heart rate and a blood thinner for avoid clots. I wish you luck in your treatment and you should be willing to try all options available to you and see what works best for you. Everyone reacts differently to a fib and its treatment.

Hi lb, have you got used to the AF by now to the point of not even noticing it anymore? If so, how long did that take? What amount of B.B. do you take to control the rate from what it would be uncontrolled (?) to what is controlled (?). Thanks in advance, Mike.

Hi mike...Was diagnosed last Nov.was pretty bad in Hospital over ten days twice until they got medication sorted out... after that I don't have many symptoms ..I was put on bisoporlol 5mg plus digoxin apixiban felt dreadful on it bisoporlol ...naughty but took it upon myself ...reduced it by halving tablet about 3 weeks ago felt much better only breathlessness so have kept taking .believe it controls rate since cutting it down my rate seems to have got slightly better.I go to see cardiologist EP on 25inst..going to ask if I can change to nebivolol...some in forum say breathlessness much improved...taking it ...fingers crossed...what are you on ?? I have gotten used to it. I do things a little bit slower like climbing stairs which leaves me little breathless -- nothing major. I used to notice it a lot at night laying on my left side but this seems to have gone away. Uncontrolled my heart rate was in the mid to high 90s but now it is around 75 to 85 which is acceptable. I take 6 1/4 mg of carvedilol twice a day and 5mg Eliquis twice a day. Sometimes anxiety worrying about afib is worse than the actual condition. Take frequent breaks, don't overdo things and practice deep breathing. Don't be a shallow breather. Hope this helps and lessens some of the anxiety you may feel about a fib. Irene

Hi ,

I had AF since a Aortic Valve replacement in 2011, 7 years now

Doctors tried to get the heart to run properly, but no luck So I have what I call mild AF can feel it at night , but don't want any treatment

Take Bisoprolol 1,25 mg Tried stronger but did not feel well,

So went back to minimum 1.25

Take Candesartan 16 mg

Have tried lots of other tablets , but had side effects

Recently started on Edoxaban , blood thinner, as Mitral Valve leaking, worry of blood clot/stroke ,

Doctor a lot happier with me starting the Edoxaban

MRI Scan shortly and then a TOE Procedure to see what is happening with the Mitral Valve

Being offered cardiac catheterisation, which I am not sure about

So waiting for a repair on the leaflets on the Mitral Valve

I have learnt to use the slogan that it is my human right to decide what drugs I require

Your body will let you know

There are a lot of terrible drugs out there, with bad side effects, you don't have to take them

Hi Eric ...my thoughts exactly..you know what your body can take.............. just looked at video regarding low blood pressure which appears to be my problem ok if you don't have symptoms says Sanja cardiologist from York my cardiologist suggested pacemaker which I'm a reluctant to take if I don't need to ....my only problem is breathlessness on exertion I also have under active thyroid which I am doing some research on ...amazing what you can find out yourself...all the best Celia
