Hydration

Just a reminder to those here in UK who are enjoying this lovely weather to do the wee wee colour test. If it looks like dry white wine all is good but if it looks like Lucosade then go drink a pint of water RIGHT NOW. ( If it looks like rose then you have a big problem. )

It is all too easy to become dehydrated which as most people know is NOT GOOD for your AF.

Enjoy wine o'clock by the way.

Bob

Thanks Bob. Have to remind myself not to panic when it is rose and I’ve eaten beetroot!

My goodness, you read my mind. Was just thinking wine o'clock and then sensible af head said no, sparkling water x

Foolishly yesterday during a lovely barbecue with my family, I treated myself to a large glass of Proseco and am now reaping the rewards of AF all night!! Some people never learn!!😕

I find the problem is if out all day or on holiday that I don't get enough to drink. Twice when I got rather dehydrated prior to AF days I passed blood that it was decided was from burst blood vessels in my then enlarged prostate.

I always try to ensure that I keep bottled water in the car. Was a little worried on Saturday when I had to take a great circle route back to Devon to avoid the M5 car park as I ran out. Stupid boy! Got away with it because I had drunk a lot already. When I did a lot of walking years ago we used a water feeder system of a giant plastic bag in our rucksack with a pipe to suck on. Made by Platypus from memory.

Must have been heavy to carry at the start of the walk

Not as bad as SAS selection! You carry food so why not water? Can't rely on clean streams up in the hills.

I used to have a Platypus- very 'purse-convenient' but a friend conned it off of me. Probably should order a new one. In the US try the catalog co <duluths.com> They have great items including a big orange keychain whistle built like a seashell inside (cochlear). It makes such a loud sound when blown it will chase away the scariest attacker and EVERYONE hears it. For now I carry a water-tight toddlers sippy cup in my purse. Small, not bulky but always have a water container with me. Good for the city where there is usually a waterfountain or a friendly restaurant who will give you water.

Not up with the lingo here. What's Wine O' Clock?

BobD profile image

Old English expression that is it time for a glass of chilled white wine before dinner. About 4.30 here in Devon

Where I am, it's medicinal red taken early evening with dinner. Also does the soul much good. Prior to getting AF, I was advised that having a glass or 2 of red wine in the evening could help to avoid a heart attack as this kept the blood thin at the optimum time for experiencing a heart attack !

BillandBen. Do flower pot men not drink ?

RajaRua profile image
RajaRua in reply toseasider18

That made me chuckle!! Whatever about the flower pot men....I've had to stop having even a glass of white wine as it seems to trip my A Fibb switch almost every time! Really miss my glass of wine and or prosecco! :((

We have a market here who sell various styles of Flower Pot men. Our local Sainsbury's are now selling wooden ornamental ducks at a tenner each.

I'm fortunate that wine does not affect me nor does coffee. However I no longer have the twelve cups a days as I did when working.

Thank you for that Bob. It has reminded me to keep my husband well hydrated too. He has a medical problem and needs to be hydrated at all times. Good post.

Hi Bob what's the recommended amount of water daily for AF? I drink a lot of tea but not a lot of water 🙃

BobD profile image

2 litres a day in this warm weather for anybody. Tea is actually net negative as it is diuretic.

The best advice I read was to drink regularly, according to how you feel. But, if you feel thirsty, you probably left it too late. So, try to keep ahead of the thirst/dry mouth.

in reply toILowe

I go by the rule drink one-half ounce water for every pound of body weight. More if it's hot, you're working out, etc. Don't know how many pounds in a stone. Sorry.

Hi Bob, lack of juice may account for the odd blips I am getting at the moment. Thanks for the reminder. :-)
