I had an ischemic stroke last April caused by AF. I take Apixaban 5mg twice a day. I have been feeling down as I havnt been able to find employment. My GP has prescribed sertraline but the contra indication leaflet says the should not be taken together has anyone had any experience of taking both?

It may be an idea to ask your pharmacist for his opinion.

I will thanks. Because I live in an isolated area my GP surgery is also my pharmacy but I will call into my local chemist for a chat.

I currently take both apixiban & sertraline 100mg ( also bisoprolol, ramipril & furosemide) & have done so since Aug 17 with no problems.

I checked these two drugs on this site and it’s giving a warning about not using them together.

I would check this out with a medical expert.

Sorry to say, American sites are known for scaremongering because of litigation, better to ask locally.

NICE guidelines indicate interaction too, Buffafly.

This needs to be discussed with a physician who is fully aware of the patient’s medical history.

Well you have opened a can of worms 🙂 The NICE interactions list suggests that most if not all the SSRIs could theoretically interreact with all the DOACs, and that the interaction would be in the red or severe category.

My instinct is that if this was a real world issue, we would have heard much more about it, since there must be tens of thousands of patients taking an SSRI and a DOAC coterminously or even together.

I agree that the prescriber has a duty of care to investigate further. If it is a question of blood levels of the DOAC changing, I believe there is a way of determining this which is available in most DGHs.

I have opened a can of worms.😉I will check with my GP on Monday. I'm sure he wouldn't deliberately try to kill me off.😅
