Stopping Bisoprolol prior to ablation

Hi all

I'm due to go into hospital for my ablation (for SVT) on Tuesday 31st October. My doctor has asked that I stop taking my Bisoprolol (10mg) 2 days prior to this, in order to, hopefully, have a successful ablation.

What I wanted to ask was this. For those of you who have been in a similar position to myself, how did you feel when you stopped the medication? Did you have any more episodes/flutters because of this? Did your symptoms increase?

I'm a little worried about stopping taking the Bisoprolol, because even though I'm on the dose I am, I still have several episodes per week.

Different EPs have different ideas. All I can say is that bisoprolol is not an anti arrhythmic drug and merely controls the rate when you are in an arrhythmia. .

Of course, I understand all that,and I can fully comprehend the reasons why I need to stop taking my medication prior to my procedure. The point of my post was to see what experiences others have had in a similar situation to myself.

Actually I am puzzled why you have to stop. Few people having AF ablation are told to stop their drugs prior to the procedure. Maybe they want you in SVT so they can see from where it is coming. With AF they can stimulate with a special drug but that may not work for SVT.

Yes, on the hospital's instructions, I stopped taking my medication when I had an ablation for SVT at the start of 2011. I was taking atenolol and probably lisinopril as well - I've been on atenolol and something else for high blood pressure since 2002. I didn't have episodes but my heart did feel unsettled and wasn't quite itself all the day before. I didn't have any problems and went home later in the day after the ablation.

Hi Lou,

I’ve had 3 ablations and my BB was not stopped for any of my procedures. As Bob says all EPs have their own ways of doing things. There is no standard way.

I have my AF ablation tomorrow and no need to stop bisoprolol. All the best for Tuesday

*all i had to stop was apixaban for 36 hrs

I had to stop my meds prior to my ablation, 3 or 4 days before. I was on anti-arrhythmics. It was successul, so I didn't need to go back on drugs afterwards, except anti-coagulants which I'm on for life.

I didn't have any problems prior to the ablation although different drugs and different person, so not much help really. I guess your EP wouldn't ask you to do that unless he/she thought you'd be OK.

Hope your ablation works as well as mine did, best thing I've ever done.
