Do people have the shock treatment because Bisoprolol isn't working for them?

Hi Jill,Cardioversion or shock treatment is administered usually as soon as the patient is stable after an AF attack- about 48hrs-72hrs to get the heart into Normal Sinus Rhythm, this may be attempted several times ,depending on the Consultant in charge of your treatment.

Oh, thanks for that...

When I had my first Af attack I was kept in hospital over night , they gave me a higher dose of bisoprilol which made my pulse lower etc..

Hi Jill, yes you sometimes have to lower/higher the dose according to how the patient tolerates the drug.

I was started on 2-5mgs, daily it absolutely floored me,so my GP changed it to 1-25mgs daily which is fine for me!

Good luck!

Ive only had one attempt at a Cardioversion, that was in Tenerife where I started with AF ,should have had another, but wouldn’t be able to fly home and by the time I got an appointment with a Cardiologist I’d gone back into sinus rhythm again!

Cardioversions work better the nearer to the AF attack rather than later on.

When I went to A&E with AF, the Drs discussed whether to do the shock cardioversion, or give me Flecainide IV. They went with the later, so I've never had the shock.

Now I pop Flecainide (and bisoprolol) at the start of AF. If it doesn't work (it always has so far) then I expect the next stage will be the shock.

How long have you been doing this? Sounds a good system..

Only a few months. The GP prescribed just bisoprolol. Then when I saw an EP Cardiologist they added Flecainide to the prescription.

I've only taken it once mind. But the pills are there in my wallet when I next need them.

I'm on bisoprolol, and when I first went to A&E they put me on a cocktail of drugs to try to get me into NSR. I think that is first option, then if that doesn't work they go to cardioversion. I have found since that getting grumpy and eating a whole chocolate cake does exactly the same thing (cure an AF attack) and am wondering whether it can be put on prescription :D
