Cruising and Af
Have a good time. Where are you going?
I have had an AF episode in all sorts of places, probably the weirdest was in May whilst on a cruise we went on a small boat out into a fjord in Iceland to watch humpback whales. It passed, I still got to see the whales, several of whom breached and no-one other than my husband knew what was happening. Accept you may have an episode anywhere at anytime and you will cope.
I think I have done trains and boats and planes, as the song goes - LOL.
I felt very secure on cruise knowing there was a clinic and doctor and nurses on call 24/7, which thankfully I didn't need.
Ensure travel insurance is adequate, do all your usual things to avoid triggers and relax and enjoy. I loved it and definately the best way to travel - far less stressful than flying!
Oh - hygiene - be very, very careful re hygiene on boats - hand gel every opportunity. The boat we were on this year were very hot on this but have been on American boats were they were rather lax.
Speak to your Doc. Then Go and enjoy. Make sure you have your meds. Perhaps dont choose excursions that are too taxing. Last year I was really bad after an ep ablation which didnt work and put my back in spasm so could hardly walk. We bought a wheelchair and my dear husband pushed me all around the ship and St Petersburg and all the other ports in the Baltic. It was a fantastic trip. So glad we didnt cancel. No cooking or cleaning for 2 weeks.
But do make sure you get full insurance disclose your condition.
Sunce then magnesium has really helped me and back much better now.
Good luck.
I go along with CDreamer on this.
Do ensure you have adequate insurance. Don't leave anything out of your declaration.
It's a very relaxing way togo...much less stressful than flying. There will be doctor and nurses on board.
Be careful with alcohol and don't be tempted to overeat!
I've been on numerous cruises over the years since diagnosis and had an episode of fast AF on the return leg coming through Biscay...15 months after my 1st ablation. I just took Bisoprolol and rested up until we got home ...40 hours later.
More recently..April ...we had to cancel a cruise with 2 days notice as i was in a persistent tachycardia and hospital advised against . Insurance paid up without a problem....Allclear
Go and enjoy! Don't let AF stop you.
Sandra
Thank you sorry to hear you had to cancel
Enjoy your cruise. Stay off the booze and stay well hydrated. Simples.
Thanks for advice
Enjoy your cruise! Just ensure you are fully insured as on-board medical care is very expensive even for a consultation. I am lucky enough to have cruised twice since diagnosis and just rest up when needed and take a sensible approach to excursions, eating and alcohol...
Thank you just nervous
I am on holiday in Ibiza with my grandchildren. It's been hard to keep off the alcohol and not to eat too much. I try not to overdo it although I have joined in with aqua fit and kiddies entertainment. My advice is not to let this beat you and to know and respect your boundaries/limits. Enjoy your cruise. X
I have had PAF for twenty years and have been very fortunate in travelling the globe, well quite a lot of it anyway lol and cruising is for me one of the nicest ways to go,, wonderful and relaxing, being fed morning till night, live entertainment every evening and hospitality staff forever on hand, its death by pleasure hehehe AND there are doctors and nurses on board 24/7 so, pack your medication and suitcases and go have some fun..........life is too short to waste such opportunities. PS if your still worried check with your GP or Cardio.
I had a bad bout of AF on a cruise, went to see Doc, he had no idea what to do. He suggested I get off the ship and go to hospital😡😡. All I really wanted to know was if I could increase the dosage of my beta blocker perhaps? I strongly suggest you see your Doc at home and make sure you have extra medication with you in case you need it. My AF went off after 5 days, not good, but i still enjoyed my cruise. Since then I had an ablation and have enjoyed 12 months of being AF free. Enjoy your holiday 😊
I have been on many cruises since being diagnosed with AF. I have had a couple of episodes while at sea, and although a bit of an inconvenience, they did pass with the help of medication (brought with me in my hand luggage). No need to visit the medical centre. I personally have always felt "safe and secure" whilst cruising as there will be a medical centre, doc and nurse much closer to you than if holidaying on land. Have a wonderful time and as others have said make sure you're fully covered by medical insurance.
