AF drugs and driving.

Has anyone had problems with insurance, or road accidents through taking AF and blood pressure drugs? This article shows some disturbing figures about increased accident rates for people taking them. But although it talks about 20% or more increases in some cases it doesn't say what the control group rates of accidents were. So if the control group rate were e.g. 2 in 1000 then a 20% increase would be a small number.

Does anyone have any knowledge on this.? I've told my insurance company about AF and don't feel it affects my driving. But no questions were asked about medication.

It depends what occurs when taking the medication. I had a urinary tract infection (UTI) when I was taking Apixaban and Amlodipine. That caused my blood pressure to drop to 95/63 accompanied by a degree of confusion. I wasn't driving at the time as my licence had been revoked because of a stroke, but I would have been unsafe if I had driven in that condition.

So it pays to keep an eye on your BP. Thank you.

Hi Janet; my blood pressure was OK with just the medication. The UTI combined with the medication caused low blood pressure. Medication can be fine until illness or something you take disturbs that equilibrium.

Not had a problem and I drive all sorts, tractor, telehandlers (like driving 3 cars at once!), cars. Also had my one-at-a-time race licence renewed a couple of years back and done a few events. But my drugs don't affect me, others might I guess.

Only time I've had a problem was after drinking, accidentally, half a glass of Proseco, thought it was alcohol-free and it wasn't!

Thanks good to know. Easy on the Prosecco then! I too have given up alcohol as it makes things worse.

I hold a PCV licence (bus driver) which was suspended when first diagnosed but after it was brought under control my GP completed paperwork for DVLA and licence was renewed. No problems. I still work, drive a bus and am over 70 and have a medical each year by law. My GP completes the form and all my conditions are declared as is my medication and my licence is automatically renewed.

Thank you. It looks as if there's nothing to worry about. I will double check with GP. But was worried that if one had an accident and had a blood test there might be a problem with the insurance.
