AF FOR 24/7 : after 3 mouth of 24 /7 af... - Atrial Fibrillati...
AF FOR 24/7
You will be asleep when they apply the shocks. Normally they will do up to three at increased power. If that doesn't work then they will wake you up and then you will need to discuss with your doctor. If it works you can go home in a few hours.
Hi Karim
it's not a whole day usually, but depends on when they can fit you in, usually you go in early morning and get prepped which is simply putting on a gown and having a canula fitted in your arm, answer some questions, BP and blood test (to make sure you are in INR range if you are taking warfarin) and then sit around and wait.
Then when there is a spare slot they will take you down to the theatre ante-room give you some sleepy juice and zap you.
Literally minutes later you come round and you are either in NSR or not.
Either way, usually back to the ward for an hour or so maybe, some tea and biscuits maybe even a sandwich, (and they like you to go for a pee not sure why, maybe someone will tell us) and then they check on you and let you go home (don't drive of course)
They almost certainly will not keep you in if you are in NSR or back in AF.
Be well
Ian
Karim.
Don't worry at all about the various things that might happen - it won't be anything serious.
You won't know anything about it at the time. In my case they put one pad on front and one on my back. Other consultants two on front. not sure the whys or wherefores.
It was explained to me that the key purpose of a cardioversion is for them to see how the heart responds, how you feel, etc, etc, to help them decide the options going forward on your AF journey. For some people with paroxysmal AF it does provide a longer term "correction" but it is seldom permanent but some do stay in sinus for a few years. Just think of it as a test that they need to do.
I had to have last food at 08:00am and arrive at the hospital at 12:00. I was first on at 14:00 and fully awake by 14:25. They said had to stay for a minimum of 4 hours and have sandwiches and drink and go to toilet before leaving. Also have a few days rest afterwards (when I asked they said, as a MINIMUM, NOT to do nothing the following two days (ie excluding the day of the cardioversion) and possibly for a further two days or so.
Good luck.
Hi Karim123,
I had a cv done last Saturday morning. I was in hospital for 8am and out for 11.30am. A very simple and quick procedure. Only took 10 minutes in fact but they keep an eye on you for a few hours after because of the anaesthetic. It cannot be considered a 'fix' though. I have already slipped back into AFib after only 3 days. Very disappointing. Seeing my GP next Friday to discuss the next step! I wish you better luck than I.
They cardio vert me when I go to ER and let me go home when I am stable
I'm having my 3rd CV on Friday, and agree with what everyone else has stated. I had a failed one on Xmas day and if this one still leaves me in AF then next step is an Ablation. The first one lasted 2 years.
thankyou and gool luck to all of us
I've had 7 cardio versions (over the years), but with 2 I had bad acid reflux afterwards. That was the only side effect. All of them worked for me and put me into NSR.
thankyou janco ///////
