Pacemaker: Had a 72 hour monitor fitted... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Pacemaker
Heart nurse telling you you need a pacemaker?? I would want to discuss that with my consultant before making any decision. Do you have AF already or is this the first time you have had irregular heart rate? Pacemaker is the last resort for most AF patients and will not in any case stop AF as the PM works on the ventricle and the AF is surprise surprise ATRIAL fibrillation.
Hi Bob right seems odd for nurse to make that decision. Or did she say it was consultants suggestion? Do you have a slow heart rate? All questions apart what are your reservations?
The registrar discussed having a pacemaker - a 24 hour monitor had shown my heart pausing for 3.5 seconds. He said a pacemaker would be the last resort and no turning back.
I then had a 7 day monitor last month. Unfortunately I wont get the results until my next appointment in 3 months time.
I would certainly ask what prompted their decision. (I am in permanent AF.)
I will ty waiting for appointment to see cardiologist
Probably due to pauses
My enlarged heart DCM was caused by the AF. The meds and occasions when I am in SR has reduced it to nearly normal. Maybe you could be the same. Find out why a pacemaker has been suggested
Being an ex-long distance runner I have pauses in my heartbeat. My 48 hour monitor revealed 3 to 4 seconds gaps in my heartbeat earlier this year.
I was told by phone to come into the hospital where two doctors immediately started talking about a pacemaker for me, lucky for me that I was already under the control of an EP at that stage, (I don't know what happened that afternoon but maybe my EP was on duty that day), anyway a message came back for me to return home with no further action.
Best Wishes
Barry
See an EP and get a lot more information before making such a serious decision. A lot if people have some heart enlargement with AF but goes back to normal or near normal when AF is treated successfully.
If you have no underlying stuff that we know nothing about there are a lot if things to try before PM.
Good luck 🍀
